A THRIVING WINTER COMMUNITY

In addition to private residences, a small apartment complex called San Souci was built for relative newcomers to the exclusive club. Here, Canadian-born ‘empire builder James J. Hill resided when he wasnt working on the railroad. Banker J.P. Morgan also stayed here briefly each year before sailing his famous ship, Corsair, to the Caribbean.

Moss Cottage: Named after the colourful veils of Spanish moss that drape down from the islands massive live oaks, Moss Cottage was the long-time winter home of George Henry Macy. Macy began as a tea importer but quickly expanded this sideline into the A&P food store chain. The rustic Moss Cottage was the first on Jekyll Island made entirely of local building materials. Macys neighbour, Frank Goodyear, lived in a three-storey stucco cottage. Hes not the rubber tire patriarch from Akron, but rather a powerful lumber baron from Buffalo.

Infirmary: Back in the days before air travel, any illnesses and accidents incurred by the Jekyll Island Clubs residents had to be treated on the island. To this end, the Goodyears donated this infirmary in 1929 for use by all residents. No ordinary country doctors here, though. The hospital was staffed by physicians from the countys premiere medical institution — Johns Hopkins. Only the best for our guests! Other non residential buildings in the historical district include the horse stables and a power house to supply lighting for the cottages.
