Do you want to restore a game? > n
There's a soft buzz, somewhere...
Behind me?
I turn around and touch the grey wall of this room.
There's no one here.
No doors, no windows, no exits.
The room is lit, even if there are no light sources...
Another buzz, in front of me...
In the northern wall there's now an open passage leading to another room.
Where am I?

Where are you?

You've been sitting in this strange, tiny chamber since you awoke a few hours ago.

Dreary Lands
by Paul Lee

As first games go, this isn't too horrible. My own first game, heck, even my second game was far worse than this. Even so, Dreary Lands really isn't good enough for the big leagues of The Annual Interactive Fiction Competition.

There are several problems, and the most noticable is also the easiest to fix: the bad spelling. Get a dictionary and use it. Get someone to proofread your text, then edit it. This alone would improve your game significantly.

The next problem to address is the prose. A sentence like:

As far as the eye can see in every direction this landscape continues.

is just torturous to read, nor does it convey any useful information. Try reading the game's text a few days after you wrote it. Get a friend to read it and make suggestions. And try writing more often. It doesn't have to be IF. Any practice will help.

The third problem is a lack of imagination. This is especially unfortunate in a puzzle box game that's trying to be surreal. For proof, consider the main villian's evilness. He's supposed to be really really evil, but the only evil that I saw was an animate tree that claimed to be evil and an interior decorating scheme that uses contrasting colours of paint. Like, c'mon. If bad decor is the worst evil you can think of, well, lucky you, but it's just not that evil.

This leads us into show, don't tell. Don't tell me that the tree is evil. Show me. For example, have the tree scoop out a frog from the swamp, hold it up in a claw-like branch, and then casually crush it to death in front of my face, the frog's guts dripping messily onto the black surface of the swamp. Such a gesture is a far more effective way of convincing me that the tree is evil without the game saying so explicitly.

Last, but not least, fix the bugs. The arrows are obviously coded poorly; 'nuff said. I managed to crash the game by attempting to go northwest in the swamp. And I discovered that I could start the car even though I was merely beside it, not in it.

Another routine day of drudgery in the office. You've tried to appear busy all morning, shuffling papers, getting coffee, all the time postponing the infinitely unappealing task of tackling your inbox.

History Repeating
by Mark and Renee Choba

I liked this one okay, but I don't think I'll ever be very enthusiastic about any game that takes place in a school. I certainly wouldn't want to relive my school days, and I'd have some choice words to say to any science teacher who bought me back against my will.

(Incidenly, the premise doesn't make sense if you think about it too much. How does Hopkins, your science teacher, know that you didn't hand in your history report, or that failing to do so would have such an impact on your life? Isn't he from the past where none of that has happened yet? You must suspend your disbelief and just accept that Hopkins knows anything you know.)

Gameplay could have been a bit better. I managed to complete the game without hints, though, so my complaint isn't too serious. Still, the NPCs were rather wooden and could've had more topics to talk about. And I fumbled a bit too much for comfort when trying to use the library and the stereo. Some additional hints would have been nice.

Possibly the most problematic part of the game is only apparent near the end, when it matters what you did 15 minutes ago, and if you didn't do a certain action recently, an important opportunity is lost. The problem with this design is that the player has no reason to expect this sort of situation, and may well have done the action much earlier, or dawdled since doing it. This means that the player may well have to replay the entire game just to set things up properly. And it's an unnecessary burden on the player; the 15 minute limit is completely arbitrary.

Ah well. I did say I liked it. I guess that's the main thing.

Jesus of Nazareth (Version 1.35)
By: Paul Panks (dunric@yahoo.com)
2005 IF-Comp entry

It is the year 28 A.D. The Roman authorities control a vast empire, stretching from Africa to Syria. You are Jesus, hailing from the small village of Nazareth.

Jesus of Nazareth
by Paul Allen Panks as “dunric”

I haven't played many of Paul's games, but of the few I have played, I like this one the best. This is a shocking admission to make, especially when saying one likes a Panks game (even a little bit) is akin to saying one likes necrophilia (even a little bit).

What did I like about it? I liked that some research obviously went into the game, which made the geography a lot less dull than it could have been. I liked the special version of surrealness that seems to be becoming a de facto standard in any religious game. And I liked that the goals of the game were clear and that I was able to finish it.

However, it must be said, this game isn't for everyone. For example, if you were offended by South Park's Jesus, or by Ghastly's Ghastly Comic's Drunk and Bitter Jesus, then you're going to be offended with this version of Jesus, too. Biblical quotes are used often and poorly, to the point where I ignored them as so much white noise. You might also be put off by more mundane IF concerns such as very long location names, unimplemented scenery, poor paragraph spacing, D&D-style combat, wooden NPCs, the sun rising every few turns, and so on. The flip-flopping between second-person modern English and third-person Old English is wearisome also.

A few quotes from the game, to give you a taste of what to expect:

But Mary looked at Jesus, replying, 'Rabbi, I have lost my medallion 'round my neck. What good is the flesh if it cannot be adorned with jewelry?'
Your hit points are now: 251
Wow! The enemy harod almost crucified you!
You are walking upon the sandy shores of the Sea of Galilee, spreading to the southwest in a finely curved arc, the expanse of which reaches the town of Tiberias, north of Ammathus.
Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth, shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
The enemy john missed you badly.
Jesus drew Mary forth and kissed her on the mouth.
Jesus said,'After my departure there will arise the ignorant and the crafty, and many things will they ascribe unto Me that I never spake.'

Ninja II
By: Paul Panks (dunric@yahoo.com)

It has been two years since the shinto shrine was attacked
by the rival ninja clan. And yet, you find yourself again here...

Ninja II
by Paul Allen Panks as “Dunric”

Congratulations, Paul. You managed to re-enter the lowest ranked game from last year's competition and made it worse by: one, putting an anachronistic computer in feudal Japan; two, creating an absurd situation by having a dragon use that computer to play one of your other text adventures; and three, inserting a puzzle that requires a verb not in the list of verbs shown when the player types HELP.

Assuming this game isn't disqualified for having been released before—a few minor changes does not a new game make—it's an obvious contender for last place. Again. Unfortunately, there's strong competition for last place dishonours this year, so that's not a sure thing.

Legends speak, of a great egyption warrior. Who rose in the military ranks faster that any other. Egypts enemies nicknamed him "The Phantom"

Phantom: Caverns of the killer
by Brandon Coker

Oh dear. Where to start. Well, as is obvious from the sample text above and to the right, the spelling, punctuation, and grammar obviously need work. And although the prologue tells us about some great Egyptian warrior, you never learn anything about him, not even his name. The Egyptian part of the premise is also ignored except for a token mention of hieroglyphics on one wall. What a disappointment. Searching for an Egyptian tomb should have involved at least some of the following: a desert, an oasis, a pyramid, a hierogylphics puzzle, clay pots, scrolls, a mummy, figs, a curse, gods with animal heads, and so on. We got one of those, probably by accident.

So what did we get? The remains of a ghost town that could as easily be in Arizona or Queensland for all anyone could tell. A tower. A forest maze. A mine maze. A maze that's just a "maze". Some gem collecting. Clues that don't lead to anything. Puzzles that I solved without solving. In other words, I brute forced through the possibilites and used UNDO if I was wrong. Nothing fun, nothing clever, nothing interesting.

And none of it really holds together. There's probably some story that the author has in his head, but didn't put into the game. Where is the town? Why is it a wreck? Who owns the tower? Why is the tower so weird? Why are there generic treasures all over the place? Do they have anything to do with the Phantom?

And the ending... was unsatisfying. The game said I won, but it sure didn't look like it. Frankly, it looked like something very very bad happened. Except I don't know what happened exactly; the ending was too vague. Very very unsatisfying.

Best typo ever:

The reasonably large room seems to be aluminated, but you see no light source but your lantern.

Psyche's Lament: An Interactive Geek Myth
by John and Lara Sichi (“Now We Have Faces”)

The short review: Nice idea. Poor execution.

The long review: This was a wonderful idea to make a game about. I'm fond of myths and fairy tales, and the story of Psyche, which contains several trials for her to overcome, is a natural choice to be retold in the medium of interactive fiction. This is a gentle retelling. All the danger from the tale has been removed and the game doesn't take itself too seriously.

The bad news is, there are some design flaws and coding problems.

The first problem I noticed was that the initial setup isn't as well explained as it could be. For example, someone unfamiliar with the myth might not understand who you are, where you are, or why you have a knife and lamp. This lack of detail and feedback continues in the rest of the game; there are many unimplemented and unexaminable scenery items. One item that is examinable is a metal triangle. I had no idea what to do with it. Even after looking at the walkthrough, I still don't understand what the triangle is or what it does.

A related problem: the game mishandles alternate ways of phrasing a command. For example, "zap mouse" works, but "wave wand at mouse" does not. Or, "aphrodite, number" may work, but "say number" does not. The response to the latter is worse than wrong; it's misleading.

My initial fond impressions weakened somewhat when I had to use the anachronistic gadgets. Did anyone else wince when Aphrodite refers to "debugging"? It would be far less jarring to replace the technological items with magical ones.

Solving Aphrodite's first test requires scrolling a massively repeating text dump. That's very bad, and should be replaced with a collapsed summary of what happened. I must also point out that in the second test, it's possible to generate an infinitely repeating text dump. That's extremely bad. I had no option except to kill the program when that happened.

I fear I must also ask that if you must put in a puzzle where ASCII graphics are important, to please display them in a monospaced font to prevent them from looking squashed and unrecognizable.

There were other problems I could rant about, but I'll stop here. Despite the problems, I did like the basic premise of the game. But get some beta-testers. Listen to them. Improve your coding skills. Ask questions if you don't know how to code something. Your next game will be a lot better for it.

PTBAD6.5:THE URL THAT DIDN'T WORK or HAVE YOU SEEN THE MUFFIN MAN? HE IS QUITE LARGE!
Greetings and welcome to the next in the illustrious and well respected PTBAD series.

PTBAD6andoneeighth a.k.a. PTBAD6.5: THE URL THAT DIDN'T WORK, OR:HAVE YOU SEEN THE MUFFIN MAN? HE IS QUITE LARGE!
by Jonathan Berman as “Slan Xorax”

This is a incoherent mess, supposedly written on the last possible day before the deadline. It's bad on purpose. So it gets a 1. Duh.

The best part of the game is the walkthrough. It r00lz.

(Completionists may wish to play around with the Adrift Runner's debugger to visit disconnected rooms or discover commands that have a chance of doing something.)
