Petrolia Ontario, Canada

The Fairbank Well
This well is pumped by a wooden jerker line with power from the Fitzgerald Rig. The horizontal walking
beam moves like a teeter-totter. The beam is connected to rods which open and close valves below which
pump the oil to the surface. Above the well stands the typical three-pole derrick used to haul the pump
rods and tubing out of the well. Once Petrolia was a forest of these black ash derricks. When the swamps
were drained and disappeared, so did the black ash tree.
