The Spring Pole

This ancient method of drilling was probably first used by the Chinese and it was well-suited to obtaining oil from the thick forests of Lambton County. Many early drillers were poor men who arrived owning only a shovel or an axe, but they were able to make a spring pole. Often they rocked on spring poles for days to penetrate only a half metre through the rock.
