International Master Bryon
Nickoloff topped the
121-player "Ontario
Open" Chess
Championship on the Victoria Day
long weekend in Toronto.
His convincing score of 5-1
included a pivotal win in round 5
over fellow I.M. Ron
Livshits, who finished
in a 4-way tie for second
place. Mr. Nickoloff won
the $800 first prize while Mr.
Livshits shared 2nd-5th $1,000
with 3 others including Michael
Schleifer, I.M. from
Quebec, Miladin
Djerkovic of Ottawa and
local F.M. Jura Ochkoos.
The Under 2000 Class Prize of
$400 each went to Christopher
Chu of Toronto and Andrei
Moskvitch of Montreal
who both scored 4-2 final scores
in the tough Open Section.
Eight players finished in a
log-jam with 3.5-2.5 results to
share $100. The
Under 2000 Section was
shared by David Gebhardt and
Edward Morariu who
both scored 5-1 finals to win
$400. each. Andrew
McMillan and 10 year old
junior Irakli
Vadachkoriya split third
place money with 4.5 scores.
The Under 1800 Section
was carved up 4 ways when 4.5-1.5
final scores were achieved by John
R. Brown of Brampton, Steve
Laughlin, Reynaldo Enero and
Mervyn Sit Yee all
of Toronto, with all of them
winning $225 each. The
Under 1600 Section was
topped by Vasile Mustafa with
5-1 to win $200 while second was
shared by Cameron Phung and
Raymond Cope who
won $50 each. The Top Under 1400
Class was shared by Raja
Panjwani of Kingston and
Perfecto Alea of
Toronto and they won $150 apiece
for 4.5 final scores. The
Top Unrated was won by Tamara
Makharadze who won $100
for her 4.5 finish. New
