The International Campaign for the Innu & the Earth (ICIE)

We are a non-governmental organization (NGO) formed to protest the low-level military flight training started on unceded Innu land by the Canadian government. Since then, forestry, mining, hydro electric projects and other interests have put the Innu under a great deal of stress.

A CRY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
by: Elizabeth Penashue
Things are getting worse regarding developments. They are getting bigger and will destroy the land, the environment, the animals. They are also cutting logs and overcutting then selling the wood to Newfoundland.

We were never given a chance to have a say in the past, but now we do have a say. But we still are not being listened to. They are telling us that they will grow new trees but even if they are, they will never be the same as the trees that grow naturally. Animals that eat there will taste different. We can already tell the difference in the taste of the rabbits, partridge and porcupine that we eat.

We know everyone needs to work to survive but they should be more careful. Here in Labrador, we can’t drink the water in some places because they are damaging the land and water.

We have future generations coming. We have riches on our land. We’re very rich in resources. But we have to protect the land and environment for our survival and for everyone’s survival in the long term.

Canada's Tibet - the killing of the Innu

  • "It is as if we had been crying softly in a sealed box where Canada's slick public relations had kept us and finally the seal is broken and we are heard... today for the first time in about twenty years I feel hope. My hope stems from a renewed belief that we can together with our friends around the world and at home exert sufficient pressure on Canada to fundamentally rethink its approach to Peoples such as my own."

Innu spokesman Penote Michel, speaking after the launch of the Survival International report, "Canada's Tibet - the killing of the Innu"
