CAN...struction - Jan-Feb 2003

Alpine Light - Curt Bulmer reports a new Alpine Light can out in stores in New Brunswick. Due to its CCS code it looks like it was designed some months ago, but is now just surfacing. The 355ml can is now metallic like the Alpine can (CCS-9813) that we reported last July-Aug. Text on the can has also changed, going from 'Biere Legere' instead of 'Legere Biere' on the previous version. The Moosehead code is ALT 09B.
CCS-9812 - Jan., 2003
Busch - The familiar 355ml Busch cans that have been sold in Canada and imported from the U.S. for years have changed. As of last December the Canadian Busch cans are now being brewed and filled by Labatt. The design of the can itself is much the same, English on one side, French the other; the brewery listing on the side panel now says "LABATT BREWING COMPANY-LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities". 4-A-52
(CCS) - Dec., 2002

Busch - Ditto on the 473ml Busch cans sold in Canada. The same white, blue, & silver design as the 355ml can, BUSCH is in large blue letters printed vertically on the 473ml version. Wayne Cunningham reports the 355ml Labatt can is out in Alberta but not the 473ml. LABATT BREWING COMPANY - LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities. 4-A-42
(CCS) - Dec., 2002

Busch Light - Larry Sherk reports the 355ml Busch Light can is now brewed by Labatt too. The mandatory is printed and positioned on the side panel as on the above two Busch cans. LABATT BREWING COMPANY - LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities. 4-A-57
(CCS) - Dec., 2002

Co-op Gold Low Alcohol - This is a new brand now available in 355ml cans in Alberta. Like its Co-op Gold cousin this is a brand brewed by Great Western Brewing Company of Saskatoon available in Co-op stores.
CCS - Jan., 2003

Coors Light - The 473mL Coors Light can now has the large "Coors LIGHT" text printed vertically on the can according to Maurice Brandon and Wayne Cunningham. The rest of the can is the usual mountain scene design with "THE SILVER BULLET" printed in black text on the neck. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - Dec., 2002

Foster's - Wayne Cunningham notes the mandatory on the 750mL Foster's can has changed. Current cans being sold in Ontario, Alberta, etc. still have the "An official sponsor of Grand Prix" logo/flags on the side but have deleted mention of Carlton & United Breweries which was printed on these cans for years. The mandatory is now "BREWED BY MOLSON CANADA UNDER LICENSE FROM FOSTER'S BREWING INTERNATIONAL, AUSTRLIA." (two lines English, then two lines French) Then, MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities is listed as well.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Dec., 2002

Grasshopper - Big Rock's Grasshopper is out in a re-designed 355mL can in Alberta according to Wayne Cunningham. The new can no longer has the Big Rock Story on the back and there are other minor changes.
CCS-9980 - Feb., 2003
Hockley Gold - Larry Sherk brought Canada's newest micro-can from a new Ontario micro brewery to our January meeting. The can is a plain silver can with blue script writing for Hockley Gold Premium Draft from Hockley Valley Brewing & Malting Company Inc., village of Hockley, Ontario, Canada (blue script around the base of the can. The only other colour on the can is a small red maple leaf at the top of the coat of arms on the label. Larry also mentions the 355ml can is a "mistake" can with the word 'Organicly' spelled incorrectly.
Ball Packaging - Dec., 2002

Kokanee - Not sure if these are test cans or not but Wayne Cunningham asked me if I had ever received photos of the Gold, Silver and Bronze Kokanee Olympic cans he sent me since he never saw them mentioned in Trillium Tales. What Gold, Silver and Bronze Oympic cans? Wayne has now sent photos and there are three special issue Kokanee cans that were issued around the time of the Kokanee Olympic can early last year (CCS-9504). These are quite nice looking cans; 1) a solid gold can with "GOLD" imprinted on the neck, 2) a solid silver can with "SILVER" on the neck and 3) a solid bronze can with "BRONZE" on the neck. Each can has a large blue circle with a large "K" in the respective colour in place of the usual Kokanee label. Each can also has a large blue Kokanee Olympic logo (with a snowboarder above a mountain) on the side panel. These are unique cans for sure and are my "PICK OF THE ISSUE". COLUMBIA BREWING COMPANY, CRESTON, B.C.
CCS-9501 / CCS-9502 / CCS-9501 - 2002
Labatt Blue Light - Wayne Cunningham also reports a minor variation to the Blue Light can exported to the U.S. The writing on the side of the 12FL.OZ./355ml can has been changed to silver.
CCS-9489 - Jan., 2003
Molson Canadian - The second wave of four special Toronto Maple Leaf Alumni cans (473mL) started appearing in Toronto area Beer Stores earlier this week (Feb10th). These cans are only available, "Now Inside 1 of 4 TALL BOY...", cases of Molson Pleasure Pack 24 bottles. The second wave includes cans for Bobby Baun (only one side pictured), Tiger Williams, Mike Palmateer and Borje Salming. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - Feb., 2003

Molson Canadian Light - We never reported the minor variation of this can (until now) that came out sometime last year following the change to the Molson Canadian Ice can. This can was changed in a similar fashion in that a white/silver pattern was printed around the neck of the can (the Ice can was printed with a blue band).
Ball Packaging - 2002
Molson Export - The rumours of a special 5L can for the Montreal Canadiens became reality in early February of this year. Several people emailed me with confirmation and/or a picture (how quickly these cans get to eBay boggles the mind) of the predominantly solid red can. The graphics are similar to the other Canadian 5L cans with the red away jersey of the Canadiens featured on one side. There is a Montreal Canadiens team crest on the other side of the can with the words "EDITION SPECIALE SPECIAL EDITION" encircling the logo.
Huber 1 - Feb., 2003

Moosehead- Wayne Cunningham reports a new "8 PACK" can for the Alpine brand in Alberta by Moosehead Breweries. This is a 355ml can.
CCS-9820 - Feb., 2003

CAN...struction - Mar-Apr 2003

Black Label Dry - This is a new brand out in the Toronto area in 355mL cans. It's very similar to a regular Black Label can with the addition of a light blue colour to the can. The word "DRY" is in blue along with the bottom part of the can below the red portion of the label. While the blue part of the can beneath the label is solid, the edges of this graphic are not. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities. For a plain can it's a great look.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Black Label Dry - The new Black Label Dry brand is also available in a 473mL can and like many other recent promotions, is currently available as an insert into 24-pack bottle cases only. Maurice reports this can is also found in 24-pack bottles of Molson Dry. The design is the 'Tall Boy' version of the 355ml can. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Black Label Supreme - President George reports another new brand line extension for Black Label, this time the Supreme 8.0 brand is available for the first time in can, now in the 950mL size in Quebec. This can also is the regular Black Label design, with "Supreme 8.0" in large white/black letters diagonally across the bottom of the can. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003
Coors Light - George and Editor Ted send word of a new 950mL Coors Light can in Quebec. The can is your regular looking silver Coors Light can with "Coors" in large red lettering now printed vertically up the can. "LIGHT" is in large white lettering outlined in black. The can has a ribbed neck. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Coors Light - The new design Coors Light can with vertical text is now out in Ontario as of mid-April in the 750mL size.
Ball Packaging - Apr., 2003

Kokanee - The 473ml Kokanee can has undergone a major re-design after many years in its current form. The new can features a two-sided design with modern graphics, different fonts and bilingual text, the latter likely due to the fact Kokanee was just launched in the Quebec market a few months ago. The design is now primarily a base, royal blue colour which takes up most of the can. The traditional mountain scene is still on the front of the can, but it's darker and not quite as prominent. "Kokanee GLACIER BEER" cuts across the front of the can in a new font and there is a 'COLUMBIA BREWERY' logo at the bottom of the can just above some new text. "MOUNTAIN SIZE" is still printed on the neck of the can on the front, but in a completely different font. It's the back of the can that is radically different for a Kokanee can; there is now a small square graphic at the top of the can which depicts the brew kettles at the Columbia Brewery looking out the window towards the Cascade mountains. New text, printed in silver and bilingual, is in the middle of the back panel above the aforementioned Columbia Brewery logo. The text says, "Every drop of Kokanee is brewed right here in Creston, B.C.". What a nice change! *TM/MC COLUMBIA COMPANY, CRESTON, B.C. 4-B-08
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Kokanee - Wayne Cunningham reports the new Kokanee design is out in the 355ml size in Alberta and Ted reports it's now available in Ontario. Same design as above without the Mountain Size designation.
CCS-0003, March, 2003

Labatt Blue - This 950mL can in the province of Quebec is so new that we goofed! I convinced Maurice Brandon that I didn't think it had changed, but Maurice thought there was something different. We left it on the shelf and didn't bring any home. It's so new, the newest 950mL can is a complete design change to the 'John Labatt' oval label style as on the 473mL version sold in Ontario at the L.C.B.O. stores.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003
Labatt Blue - There are lots of changes to the newest 473ml Blue can now on sale in Ontario, although you might not notice it first off as it's similar to the current 'oval label' version. The new 473ml Blue can has been re-designed with a much larger oval label and graphics similar to the 473ml version on sale at the LCBO. The new can doesn't have the plain silver band around the top of the can however, nor does the 'John Labatt' script crest extend out from the top of the label. Essentially the label on the 473ml can now matches the 355ml. The other noticeable change is the 'Pilsner' script and other text on the label is now gold instead of white. A larger "473ml" has been moved to the bottom of the can from the top. This Blue can has a newer version of the Labatt mandatory which seems will be standardized on newer Labatt cans. It's bilingual and printed vertically up the side panel. "RECYCLABLE ALUMINUM CANS" in bilingual text has now been added to all Labatt cans. (including the 473ml Kokanee can). *TM/MC LABATT BREWING COMPANY-LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities". 4-B-26
Ball Packaging - March, 2003
Labatt Blue - President George reported rumours of a new Labatt's set at Jim's Executive meeting in early March. Editor Ted & George confirm they purchased the first four of the seven can set the week of March 17th in Toronto. The new 355mL Labatt's Blue set is titled "Legacy Can Series" and features each major label change on Labatt's Blue since the brand was introduced in Canada in 1951. A seven can set includes the year's 1951, 1958, 1961, 1965, 1984, 1992 and 2001. The cans & labels are as follows:
1951 - Labatt's PILSNER BEER LIGHT DRY (Gold/Blue/Red) 4-A-22P7
1958 - Labatt's PILSNER BEER LAGER BEER (Gold/Blue, Hugh F. Labatt medal 4-A-22P1
1961 - Labatt's PILSNER BEER (Gold/Blue/Red) 4-A-22P2
1965 - Labatt's BIERE PILSNER BEER, call for 'Labatt's Blue' (Excellence seal) 4-A-22P3
1984 - Labatt's BIERE PILSNER BEER, call for 'Labatt's Blue' (red maple leaf) 4-A-22P4
1992 - Labatt's Blue (Blue with text printed diagonally) 4-A-22P5
2001 - Labatt Blue Pilsner (Blue, oval label) 4-A-22P6
The back face of each can has a small 'Labatt Blue Pilsner' graphic at the top of the can, then the year printed in white on a blue/gold ribbon followed by NHL highlights and a statement about Labatt Blue from that year. This promotional set also has something to do with Labatt's being an NHL sponsor as the text at the end of each can says, "Labatt Blue. Proud Sponsor of the NHL. c.NHL 2003". The side panels have the newer, standardized mandatory, *TM/MC LABATT BREWING COMPANY - LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities.
CCS-0018 & CCS-0019 - March, 2003

Labatt Blue - Curt Bulmer reports a couple of changes to the 355ml Labatt Blue can on the east coast. It's a darker blue colour and has different wording above the bar code (likely the aforementioned changes to the mandatory text).
CCS-9679 - March, 2003

Labatt Blue - As we go to press Labatt Blue has come out with a special, promotional 5L can for the NHL Playoffs. Editor Ted sent along the photo(s) you see here a few weeks ago and I found the can in Toronto stores today (April 19). A great looking design, this 5L can has "THE STANLEY CUP" and text on one side and the colourful logos of all NHL teams around the top of the can. A large silver Stanley Cup tilts to the right side of the can. There is also an 'NHL Cup Crazy' logo along with the text, "Official Beer Sponsor of the NHL Playoffs" printed on the can. A definate candidte for 'Pick of the Issue'. *TM/MC LABATT BREWING COMPANY-LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities.
Huber 1 - Apr., 2003 6-A-01P

Labatt Nordic - A second 355ml Nordic can has been produced with minor changes. The main difference is the neck is now gold rather than red on the first can. The "ORIGINAL 0.5 BREW" text on the neck has been deleted. The gold accenting on 'NORDIC' has been enhanced. *TM/MC LABATT BREWING COMPANY, 7 cities.
CB-9592 - March, 2003 4-A-41

Molson Canadian - Rumours surfaced that the 5L "BUBBA" hockey cans would come out in a 2nd version; this time with 'away' jerseys. The only one to surface was the Team Canada 5L can, this time in a red jersey.
Huber 1 - March, 2003

Molson Canadian - Dave Avdichuk was the first to report another Molson Canadian 5L can exported to the U.S., this one a combination of two previous versions. This one uses the newer, current "MOLSON CANADIAN IMPORTED" label on one side of the red/white/blue can that came out last year, but now with the Detroit Red Wing sweater on the other side. As per the information Dave sent along and as on the two-sided Red Wing can, it states 'the official import of the Detroit Red Wings'. The 'jersey' side of this 5L can is a slightly differs from the aforementioned silver, two sided can, as that can only uses the Detroit logo on both sides.
Huber 1 - March, 2003

Molson Canadian - Molson quickly followed up the Toronto Maple Leaf Alumni promotional cans with a second hockey-themed promotion, this time featuring long time hockey icon Don Cherry and his classic suits. Collector cans of Molson Canadian are now available in three sizes in Don Cherry "suit" designs. There are eight collector cans in each of the 355mL and 473mL sizes and four of the designs on 5L "BUBBA" cans. Visit Molson's iam.ca web site for more details and distribution; the designs are pictured on cases and Bubba packaging. In no specific order the eight "suit" designs are:
1. Red check suit with yellow tie & Don's dog Blue. Also on 5L Bubba
2. Yellow suit with black checks. Also on 5L Bubba
3. Grey suit with black checks.
4. Black pin stripe suit with Canadian tie & Don's dog Blue. Also on 5L Bubba
5. Green suit with rose in lapel. Also on 5L Bubba
6. Tan suit with red rose in lapel.
7. Blue suit with blue checks.
8. Blue & black suit with checks and red stripes.
A big thank you to Molson's Manager of Public Relations Michelle Robichaud for sending along the press releases and can fact sheet. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.

Molson Canadian Light - The 355mL can for this brand has undergone a radical change and looks great! Canadian Light is now in a silver can with something like a water droplet design in the background and a completely new label. The new label is a slanted, oval design with red on the left side and a thicker blue band on the right. 'MOLSON CANADIAN LIGHT' (with emphasis on the CANADIAN LIGHT) is in large blue and red text in the middle of the label along with a large red maple leaf that is also on a slant. The new label takes up most of the front of the can (contents info at the base). A smaller version of the label appears on the back of the can as the slogan, "THE REFRESHING TRUE CANADIAN TASTE THAT NEVER QUITS" is printed in small, navy blue text at the top of the can and in French at the bottom. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities. (If it wasn't for the Don Cherry cans, this would be my "Pick of the Issue", it's a great looking new design!)
Ball Packaging - April, 2003

Molson Dry - The side panel on all sizes of Molson Dry have changed. All text is now in silver lettering with the exception of a web address which has been added to the middle of the panel. Yet the side panels of the different sizes are not consistent. The side panel of the 355mL can is flush with text above the bar code. In addition to the italicized text, the text is now positioned horizontally rather than vertically as on the previous versions. "www.molsondry.com" has been added in white lettering to the middle of this panel. These cans were picked up in Montreal but I've noticed them in Toronto too. MOLSON CANADA 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Molson Dry - Ditto on the 950mL size can available in Quebec. The only real difference on this side panel is the fact the text is separated into two sections; the Molson logo and web addresses are at the top of the side panel while the MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities listing is just above the bar code. In other words there is a large blank space in the middle of the panel.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003
Molson Dry - Wayne Cunningham reports the 750mL size with the above changes is out in Alberta.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Molson Hi DRY - This is a fairly new 950mL can although it may have been out since early last year. It's one of those you look at and think you've got it because it seldom changes. The main difference on this Hi DRY can is it's a "plain" can. No contests, no "Le Boss". Just a regular label. According to my records, Hi Dry came out in 1998 and we had three 950mL cans that year, none of which have a plain label. As well it has an English mandatory whereas the others were French. Interestingly, the mandatory is printed vertically on the side panel; unlike the new Dry cans above. Will this can change? MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - 2002
Moosehead Light - Curt Bulmer confirms the new 355mL can Jim saw at the can company is now out (last week of March). This is a beautiful new metallic blue can with the water droplet graphics in the background. The front of the can is the usual circular MOOSEHEAD LIGHT label with a silver/black moose head. The back of the can now has "MOOSE LIGHT" in large red/white text towards the top of the can. There is a small silver moose head to the right of the word MOOSE. CCS-9817 - March, 2003

Sleeman Premium Light - "Roll out the barrel...." This seems to be the Sleeman mantra as they have quickly introduced yet another brand into the 330ml, barrel-shaped can. This time its Premium Light. Like the others the can is silver with white graphics in the background and a solid band of gold around the top. The Sleeman crest is maroon and white. These 330mL cans are manufactured at Ball's facility in Puerto Rico. Thanks to editor Ted for notifying me of this can. SLEEMAN BREWING & MALTING CO. LTD. LA BRASSERIE SLEEMAN GUELPH CANADA N1L 1E9

Alpine - Curt Bulmer reports a new commemorative can available in the Moncton area. This 355ml can commemorates the Town of Shediac's 100th anniversary 1903-2003. The can has a really nice, colourful back panel in white, blue, red and gold, similar to the Brayonne cans. ALP 09P. My 'Pick of the Issue.'
CCS-9831 - June, 2003

Big Rock Alta Light -Wayne Cunningham reports yet another new Big Rock brand in a 355ml can, this one called Big Rock Alta Light. Wayne says it's not a bad looking can...blue with gold, black, white and silver.
CCS-9982 - Apr., 2003

Black Label Ice - The 355ml can has been re-designed to match that of its new sister brand Black Label Dry we reported last issue. It's a reguler Black Label can/label with the addition of a blue colour to the can. The word "ICE" is in blue along with the bottom part of the can below the red portion of the label. While the blue part of the can beneath the label is solid, the edges of this graphic are not. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - March, 2003

Black Label Supreme - This brand is now out in 355ml cans in the Vancouver area. The design is the same as the 950mL size in Quebec. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - June, 2003

Bud Light - Some Bud Light packaging changed awhile back and there were rumour of a new cans design for some time. Wayne Cunningham reported a new 355ml can in Alberta last month with "BREWED IN WESTERN CANADA". The design is now like that in the U.S., a blue oval circle with "BUD LIGHT" in large white/red text in the centre, on the silver base can. The oval label is printed vertically three times on the can. The mandatory is the new standard, bilingual Labatt listing. 4-B-54
(CCS) - May, 2003

Bud Light - The new Bud Light design (355ml) is now out in Ontario but it's a slightly different version. The new oval label design is the same of course, but the text is "BREWED IN CANADA". 4-B-09
(CCS) - May, 2003

Carlsberg - Labatt's have issued a nice set of eight 355ml cans for "Euro 2004 PORTUGAL." Originally available as an in-case promotion in 24-packs of bottles, the cans are now out in six-packs in Toronto area stores. Each can represents a different country and its 'European Championship History', depicted in green text on a silver/white panel on the can. The cans have one or two additional colours from the standard green/gold/white and red Carlsberg colours and feature a 'wrap-around' design with the graphics representing each countries' colours on its flag and that of a soccer player celebrating either a goal or a championship. Each can also has a 'UEFA Euro 2004 PORTUGAL - Carlsberg OFFICIAL SPONSOR' logo positioned vertically beside the bar code. LABATT BREWING COMPANY LONDON, CANADA.

Coors Light - With the return of 12-pack suitcase cans to Ontario (just for the summer according to a Beer Store source) comes a series of promotional Coors Light cans. These 355mL Coors Light cans have the regular label on one side of the can and a promotional text message in large silver/grey shaded lettering on the back. Joe DeFreitas reports four cans and editor Ted says there could be a bunch more as these sayings match a poster campaign Coors has running in Toronto. The ones we know of are 1) OPEN LATE, 2) SOMEONE GET THIS BEER A GUY, 3) BORN IN THE ROCKIES RAISED IN A GLASS, 4) INGREDIENTS BEER, 5) KICKED OUT OF EVERY MAJOR FOOD GROUP. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - May, 2003

Kokanee Gold - Yet another long-time bottled only product is now out in a 355ml can. Wayne Cunningham reports this can in Alberta in early June. Interestingly Wayne says the can is blue and gold but differs a bit from the design on the bottle label. I didn't see this can in Vancouver stores while attending Dennnis' service.
CCS - June, 2003

Labatt Blue - The 5L craze continues south of the border with a 3 can set of Labatt Blue hockey scenes. These 5L kegs came out in April and feature pond hockey motifs; 1) Same time next week, 2) Play till dark and 3) First track. These are nice colourful cans. One or two of these designs were found in Winnipeg mixed in with Canadian 5L Blue cans, obviously a distribution error. Thanks to Bob Berry for passing along the information from Wayne Ronn and also to Wayne Cunningham.
April, 2003

Labatt 50 - Labatt's has also issued a four can set of replica labels for Labatt 50 in addition to the seven replica Labatt Blue cans reported last issue. 1) The first can is the so called "tulip" glass label and according to text on the back panel of the can "this can is a replica of the one used from 1961 to 1972." (4-A-01P1), 2) replica label used from 1980 to 1991 (4-A01P2), 3) The third can isn't a replica can at all, but a variation of a label(s) used previously. The label has a large red/white "50" positioned diagonally, above which is the current 'Labatt' script logo (4-A-01P3), 4) The fourth can is a definite 'retro' label, the one with gold oval circles around the label and John L. Labatt gold medallions. This is a replica of the label used between 1956-1960 (4-A-01P4).

Molson Export - Molson is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Molson Export this year and has released special packaging that traces the history of the brand. There are cases, bottles with hologram versions of four labels and a four can set featuring the labels from "1903", "1955", "1962" and "2003". Each 355mL can has the replica label on one side of the can with the current Export label on the opposite side. Moosehead - The current 355ml green can available in Vancouver has changed. For some reason, the mandatory has changed to "Brewed Under License By Alpine Breweries Limited, Saint John, N.B." I checked our Moosehead cans after returning from Dennis' service and they are still reflect the Moosehead Breweries listing (CCS-9799). This can was made last December. MHW-09
CCS-9821 - 2003
Moosehead Dry Ice - The newest can now has "6% ALC./VOL." in large gold text (x3) around the can's red neck. Same slate grey/silver/red design as before. Note the CCS number follows that of the new Moosehead can above. MOOSEHEAD BREWERIES LIMITED, SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK. MDI 09B
CCS-9822 - 2003
Moose LIGHT - A second version of the new Moosehead Light can has been made for Ontario and marks the first time this brand has been sold in the Province. The 355ml can and bottles came out in early June. Same metallic blue water droplet design of course but different bar code, CSPC code and Moosehead # MHL 09E.
CCS-9834 - June, 2003

Old Style - Larry Sherk first reported a set of four, 473ml Old Style cans back in late March but no details. Wayne reported them in late April but no details. Finally Larry Sampson emailed a photo in May. When all is said and done these cans are available in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. Ironically, while these were the first cans I heard about for this new list, they are the last ones I have to add to complete this issue on the Canada Day holiday. All four cans have the slogan "Simply Great Beer" in yellow text on them. In no particular order the four cans are: 1) green can with two large white rabbits, 2) white can with two large yellow bi-planes, 3) black can with vertical green stripes and red "pil" text and 4) green can with lots of yellow bunnies.

Sleeman Honey Brown - Larry Sampson first reported this new 5L can available in B.C. in April. Larry Sherk reports the can is now available in Ontario. The design and colours are similar to that of the 330mL size. SLEEMAN BREWING & MALTING CO. LTD. LA BRASSERIE SLEEMAN GUELPH CANADA N1L 1E9
Ball Packaging U.S. - Apr., 2003

CAN...struction - Sep-Oct 2003

Alberta's Best Classic Premium Lager - Wayne Cunningham reports yet another new brand in a 355mL can in Alberta; this time it looks like it's an offshoot of the same brewery that produces the Bowes cans (see below). Wayne says this is a very nice looking can with a picture of the Rocky Mountains.
CCS-9841 - Sept., 2003
Alpine - Curt Bulmer confirmed another La Foire Brayonne can for 2003 in late August. It is "not all that different from last year's" according to Curt. It has the same fireworks design as other years, in gold, with the dates and text in red and blue. The blue band around the bottom of the can is the only indication of 2003, with the web site and "27 juillet au 3 auot 2003" in white lettering. MOOSEHEAD BREWERIES LTD., SAINT JOHN
CCS-9830 - Aug., 2003

Black Horse - Larry Sherk reports a minor variation to the current label 355ml can from Newfoundland. This variation has the mandatory text printed on four lines instead of five and has 'Beer/Biere' under the % vol text.
Ball Packaging - July, 2003
Black Label Extra Old Stock - Extra Old Stock is now Black Label Extra Old Stock in B.C. according to Larry Sherk. Wayne found the 355ml cans on a recent vacation to Vancouver Island. Along with the new Dry brand reported last issue, Molson seems to have decided to re-brand the Carling Black Label family of beers. "EXTRA OLD STOCK" remains in its black outlined with gold text on the label but is now positioned over top a silver Black Label graphic with 'CARLING Black Label' above Extra Old Stock. This 355mL can has a plain black band around the neck followed by a narrow red band. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003

Black Label Extra Old Stock - A second version of the new design above is now out, this time a 355mL "8 PACK" can. Same as above except with "8 PACK" in large silver lettering four times on the black neck. Wayne Cunningham first found these 8 Packs on Vancouver Island in August. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities
Ball Packaging U.S. - July., 2003

Black Label Ice - The new Black Label standardized brand family and design is now out for the Ice brand in the 473mL size can. This can is available in Ontario and Wayne Cunningham saw it in B.C. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging U.S. - July, 2003

Black Label Ice - Similar to the 355ml and 473mL cans, the new label is now available in Ontario in the 750mL can size.
Ball Packaging U.S. - July, 2003

Boss -This is a new brand in cans and one of Dave Avdichuk's discoveries in Calgary in August. This is a 355mL black can with the brand name in large red letters printed vertically up the can in two spots. The brewery is listed as 'BOWEN ISLAND BREWING COMPANY CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA', one of the breweries/names Big Rock now owns as a result of purchasing Whistler Brewing. Our tour of Big Rock at the CB convention confirmed this can is filled at Big Rock for Crowfoot Liquor, a private liquor chain in Alberta.
CCS-9988 - Aug., 2003

Boss Light - The light version of the above new brand. This 355ml can is silver with the same large, red lettering for "BOSS". 'Light' is in blue script, outlined in white, printed over top of "Boss" at the bottom.
CCS-9978 - Aug., 2003

Bowes Original Lager - This 'Quebec' brand is now out in a redesigned 355mL can. The can is a metallic, light red (bordering on orange) with a gold band around the neck. The Bowes label is a gold oval with gold, white and black text. A blue ribbon cuts through the bottom of the label with small white text, 'Brassee au Canada SPECIAL 7 Brewed in Canada'. Although the brewery is listed as 'BRASSERIE BOWES 7 CIE BOWES BREWERY & CO LAVAL, QC, CANADA *MC/TM, I believe the can is filled at Great Western in Saskatoon since the can is manufactured in Calgary, has a GW filling code, and was purchased at a Calgary Co-Op.
CCS-9833 - July, 2003

Bowes Double Dry - The new design for Bowes is also now out for their other can, the 355ml Double Dry brand. This is a metallic navy blue can with a gold/red oval label and gold around the neck. Very nice!
CCS-9835 - July, 2003
Budweiser - Mark Armstrong reports a new, minor variation to the 355ml Budweiser can sold in the Province of Quebec. As best as I can tell the only change is to the mandatory; it is now bilingual (the previous can was French only). 'BIERE/BEER' is on both sides of the can and the Labatt code is slightly different with an additional digit, 4-A-07. LA BRASSERIE LABATT/LABATT BREWING COMPANY, 7 cities.
CCS-0077 - July, 2003

Carling Black Label Light - Molson is continuing its standard branding of the Black Label family with the Carling line of canned beers. On Saturday October 4th I discovered a new 355mL can for the former Carling Light can. It's the same basic silver design with an odd twist. Unlike the Black Label cans above, this can seems to be 'in transition' with one side of the can showing the existing label and the other side the new Carling Black Label Light label. Very strange! And to further complicate things, text on the black neck of the can says, "Same refreshing beer, now called Carling Black Label Light" in English/French. Does this mean there will be a new, regular Black Label light can with the new label on both sides of the can? Only time will tell. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - Oct., 2003

Carlsberg - Maurice Brandon reports he found a new size Carlsberg can while in Nova Scotia in September. This is the regular, plain Carlsberg label, now out in the 473mL size. Curt Bulmer confirms its brewed by Labatt's.
Ball Packaging U.S., Sept. 2003
Chilkoot - Larry Sherk passed along a Yukon Brewing Co. newsletter that shows a picture of their new 355ml Chilkoot can. Brewerianist member Dave Gardner, Yukon's rep in Alberta mentioned this at the C.B. convention in Calgary. It looks like a white can, similar to the first version except that a snowflake is now the main design. The brewery's "Beer Worth Freezin For" slogan (one of the best beer slogans ever in my opinion) is printed on the neck of the can. Yukon Brewing Company, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003

Co-Op Gold Premium Light - Wayne Cunningham reports another new Co-Op brand in 355mL can's cousin. Brewed in Saskatoon by Great Western, this can is silver with a similar brown/grey cowboy graphic to that of the gold can. Black text on the side panel says, 'CO-OP is a registered trademark of TMC Distributing Ltd., used under licence by Calgary Co-operative Association Limited.' Nice looking silver can!
CCS-9995 - July, 2003

Coors Light - A sixth Coors Light can with promotional text on the back panel was confirmed just as the last Trillium Tales was being printed. It's a B.C. only can as it says "BREWED IN B.C." on the back. This can was photographed (albeit with Ted's 'doctoring', could you tell?) last issue. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - June, 2003

Coors Light - An "8 PACK" version the 355mL Coors Light can is out in western Canada. The 355mL can is the regular Coors Light can with a red band around the neck and a large black "8 PACK" on either side. Note: the red band around the top is not solid red; it has an interesting red/silver effect at the bottom. Different! MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003

Coors Light - The Pittsburgh Canvention is barely a week old and we have a new promotional Coors Light can out. Larry Sherk and Bob Berry report a 355mL "football" can. The can has a football lace on each side with a silver, leather type graphic on the base silver can. The words, "Proud supporter of great football." are printed in plain black text beneath the football lace, one side in English, the other side in French. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - Sept., 2003

Grumpy Bear Honey Wheat - Give Dave Avdichuk credit for discovering two new brands of beer in cans and the first two cans from THE GRIZZLY PAW BREWING COMPANY in Canmore, Alberta. They are both black cans with copper bands around the top and bottom of the can. The Grumpy Bear label is that of...a grumpy bear and the brand name in red text, with HONEY WHEAT in white over a gold ribbon. Dull yellow text around the copper band at the top says, 'VISIT OUR MICROBREWERY CANMORE ALBERTA' between two Canadian flags. The text around the bottom says, 'SMALL BATCH BREWED IN THE HEART OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES'. The side panel has the mandatory, some information about Grizzly Paw and the web address.
Ball Packaging U.S., July, 2003

GW Gold - I'm not sure if we ever reported this can, a minor variation to the 355mL Great Western Gold brand, last reported in May-June 1998. At some point the brand name changed to "ORIGINAL" Gold, and the mandatory now says, 'Brewed Exclusively in Saskatchewan'.
CCS (2002)
Jack's American Lager - Yet another new Mountain Crest Liquors can reported by Wayne Cunningham back in June. It's a 355ml red, white and blue can with stars and stripes, imported from the U.S. for the Mountain Crest Liquor chain in Alberta.
Ball Packaging - June, 2003

Keith's IPA - The basic green Keith's can that's been out for years has undergone a major facelift. The new design 355ml green can was reported by Maurice Brandon and Larry Sherk back towards the end of July. The new can is a dark, metallic green still with the red and gold oval Keith's label. The label is updated with new fonts, and now has a small Nova Scotia flag on the red oval at the bottom of the label. The label is now on one side of the can only. The back side of the can has the "ALEXANDER KEITH'S" story in English and French, complete with the slogoan they've used for several years now, "Those who like it. like it a lot." There are gold bands now around the top (neck) and bottom of the can, and the text "BREWED ONLY IN NOVA SCOTIA. SINCE 1820.", also in English and French, added to the neck. The Labatt code on this can is 4-A-16. A nice looking change! *TM/MC KEITH'S BREWERY, HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
CCS-0080 - July, 2003

Keith's IPA - The new design 473ml Keith's can came out in Ontario's Liquor stores in August, several weeks after the 355ml version. Same design changes as above. The Labatt code is 4-B-12, Interestingly, Paul Murphy pointed out to Larry Sherk this can is not sold in Halifax where it's brewed and canned!
Ball Packaging - Aug., 2003

Keith's Celebration Amber Ale - Maurice Brandon called to report yet another special can inserted into cases of bottles here in Ontario. Back in July Keith's produced a very nice looking, special 473ml can for the 208th birthday of the brewery's founder Alexander Keith. This is a gold coloured can with a relief picture of the outside of the brewery in the can's background. The front of this can features an oval label with "ALEXANDER KEITH'S Celebration AMBER ALE" in white & gold text. The back of the can has a small photo of A.KEITH and the story of this Amber Ale inside a brown and gold oval. "A tribute to Alexander Keith's birthday from his Nova Scotia brewery." is printed in English and French on the side of the can. The Labatt code is 4-A-21. There are a lot of nice, new cans but this is 'The Pick of the Issue.' Maurice says these Celebration Ale cans were on sale as singles in Halifax. *TM/MC KEITH'S BREWERY, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
Ball Packaging - July, 2003

Kitsilano Maple Cream Ale - This is the newest Granville Island brand to appear in cans (first in some time). Primarily a brown and black 355ML can, the label is a multi-coloured scene of several people playing beach volleyball at Kitsilano Beach (Kitsilano is a distinct district of Vancouver for the uninitiated). 'Small Batch Brewery' is in white text on the black band at the base of the can. GRANVILLE ISLAND BREWING COMPANY VANCOUVER, BC CANADA.
CCS-9999 - July, 2003

Kokanee - The new design Kokanee can is also now out in a 355ml "8 PACK" version. This can has a silver band around the neck with "8 PACK" printed four times in blue. A busy can but nice looking.
CCS-0096 - Aug., 2003

Kokanee - Doug Logan pointed out he saw a new Kokanee can in the U.S. while either on the way to Calgary or returning home…but he didn't buy any! Since Wayne Cunningham sent me a can I can report the details; the 'new' U.S. can isn't the new Canadian Kokanee design however. The can uses the older mountain scene and has "IMPORTED" in silver/blue text across the top of the brand name. The can is much more metallic and shiny looking and uses this silver/blue text scheme as a kind of shadow effect. The can has the U.S. gov't. warning and the mandatory is, '*TM-COLUMBIA BREWING CO.-IMPORTED BY KOKANEE IMPORTERS, NORWALK, CT 06856-BREWED AND PACKAGED IN CANADA BY COLUMBIA BREWING COMPANY, CRESTON, B.C'
CCS-9621 - July, 2003
Labatt Blue - We reported a new east coast variation of Labatt Blue a few months back. The Ontario version of this can has been out for a few months now. This 'current' Blue can has the John Labatt oval label design along with the standardized mandatory on the side panel with "RECYCLABLE ALUMINUM CANS" text. Some cans in this run are a very noticable dark blue. The Ontario +904318 code differs from that on the east coast can (CCS-9679) as the does the Labatt spec. code of 4-A-22.
CCS-9678 - June, 2003
Labatt Blue - The 750mL size is now out in the oval design with the John Labatt logo at the top of the can. This can also has the new, standardized mandatory on the side panel; the one with the 'RECYCLABLE ALUMINUM CANS' text. TM/MC LABATT BREWING COMPANY-LA BRASSERIE LABATT, 7 cities. The Labatt code for this can is 4-A-44.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003
Labatt Nordic - The 355ml/12oz. U.S. "Imported" version of this low alcohol brand was spotted in a tote at the Pittsburgh Canvention. The can looks like the Canadian version, now with gold around the top of the can.
CB-959X - 2003
MGD Genuine Draft - Shortly after I finally came across the Miller Harley Davidson cans in my local beer store in July, I noticed a the regular label MGD can had changed. There were some of each mixed into a six pack. The new 355ml label has been changed to "MGD Genuine Draft" in large black letters. This brand is brewed by Molson Canada in Vancouver, under license from Miller. The cans all come from Ball's Seattle plant.
Ball Packaging U.S. - July, 2003

Molson Canadian - This new "8 PACK" can was found by Dave Avdichuk in Calgary in August. It's your regular Molson Canadian can, now with a red band around the neck and "8 PACK" in blue text once on each side of the can. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003

Molson Canadian - Molson sure recognizes a good thing (or package) when they see it. Hockey Bubbas, Don Cherry Bubbas, Bubbas for the Molson Indy and now Football Bubbas. Eight new Bubbas promoting Molson's sponsorhip of Canadian Football League teams came out this past summer. The six cans pictured were issued, with two cans, Saskatchewan: #10 - dark sweater, green numbers and Calgary: #20 - grey sweater, white numbers, made, but not filled.
Calgary: #10 - red sweater, white numbers and #55 white sweater, red numbers;
Edmonton: #1 - dark green sweater, yellow number and #50 - white sweater, green numbers;
Saskatchewan: #44 - green numbers, white sweater and #80 - green sweater, white numbers
Huber 1 - Aug., 2003

Molson Canadian Light - Mark Armstrong (I think) emailed me a photo of a new size can for Molson Canadian Light that showed up at the Ottawa chapter's summer BBQ. The 473ml can is the current silver, blue and red design and has blue bands around the top and bottom. Unfortunately I cannot make out the gold text that's printed around the bands as the photo is very small. According to Maurice Brandon, this can was another short-lived promotional can, placed in 24 packs of bottles in a certain part of the Toronto area. The story goes that while most areas of Toronto had special 24-packs of Molson Canadian giving away tickets or a chance for tickets to the Rolling Stones SARS concert in July, some areas didn't get this package and instead got this special 24-pack of Molson Canadian Light with the 473mL can. No sign of it anywhere else yet.
Ball Packaging - Aug., 2003
Molson Dry - Molson issued a three can set of 950mL cans for the inaugural MOLSON INDY race in Montreal in August. Each can has a square MOLSON INDY MOLSON DRY MONTREAL CIRCUIT GILLES-VILLENEUVE logo, above which are the words, 'Carburant officiel' in silver. 1) plain Indy car graphic, 2) Indy cars in action (graphic with lines), 3) Indy car in red/silver. Thanks to Ted for sending a photo and Wayne Cunningham who reported these in early July. MC/TM MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging - July, 2003

Molson Export - Mark Armstrong and Dave Fowler emailed photos of a five can set of 950mL Molson Export cans for the Montreal Alouettes. The graphic is a rendition of a Montreal Alouettes sweater similar to that of the CFL Football Bubbas. One side of the can has 'MONTREAL' in large white text along with the player's number and signature. The other side of the can has the player's last name in large white text at the top of the can over the top of the MOLSON EXPORT label. In numerical order the five cans are 13) CAVILLO, 33) HEPPELL, 65) LAMBERT, 68) CHIU and 75) PHILLION.
Ball Packaging - Sept., 2003

Molson Golden - The current 355ml can sold in Ontario has a minor variation. The 'Beer is Better Fresh' logo has now been replaced with the Molson 'M" 1786 graphic on the side panel.
Ball Packaging - Aug., 2003
Moosehead Dry- Curt Bulmer sends along a photo and details of a new 355ml Moosehead Dry can. It has be completely re-designed, and while somewhat plain is a cantender for 'Pick of the Issue.' It is silver with a navy blue, diagonal graphic at the top. Moosehead is written in gold text across this blue band. "DRY" is now in very large white text taking up most of the face of the can. The white text is outlined with gold, blue and red. The can is bilingual and also has a white Moose head at the bottom left of the label on each side of the can. The brewery's code for this can is MHD 09C. MOOSEHEAD BREWERIES LTD., LA BRASSERIE MOOSEHEAD LIMITEE, SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK.
CCS-9837 - Aug., 2003

Mountain Crest Lager - Wayne Cunningham reports another change to the 355ml/12oz. Mountain Crest Lager can. This can has the same basic design but with many minor changes to it. This brand is contract brewed in the U.S. for the Moutain Crest Liquor chain in Alberta. None of the cans have ever mentioned the brewery.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Sept., 2003
Old Style - Another Dave Avdichuk discovery while in Calgary. At least one of the designs of the 'Simply Great Beer' set is out in the 355ml size. This is the white can with a rabbit piloting a large yellow bi-plane.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003

Pacific Pilsner - It's good to remember Dennis Inkster and it's perhaps fitting we mention his name as I add this last 67th new can to this list. This is a can that Dennis and I use to check every time we visited the Cambie St. liqour store as it seldom changes. Finally it changes in late 2003. A new design that is not much different from before, the 355ml can is now navy blue around the bottom part of the can and now has a gold band around the neck. 'Pacific Western Brewing Company' is printed in white at the bottom of both sides of the can with the full mandatory in white block letters on the navy blue side of the can. A nice, colourful change.
CCS-8008 - Sept., 2003
Perfect 10 Extra Strong Malt Liquor - This is the second new brand this issue for Alberta's Mountain Crest Liquors. This is a black, 355ml/12oz. can produced in the U.S. and imported into Canada.
Ball Packaging U.S. - July, 2003

Piper's Pale Ale - George Newman and Wayne Cunningham also both reported the new 355ml Piper's Pale Ale can in a new design. This can has changed completely. It's now gold and red with a large oval "PIPER'S Pale Ale" label on one side and a back panel with large "PIPER'S Pale Ale" in red at the top. The back panel also has a "VANCOUVER ISLAND BREWERY" logo and black italics text, beneath which is VANCOUVER ISLAND BREWERY, VICTORIA, B.C. in block lettering. A really nice looking can from this brewery!
CCS-9991 - June, 2003

Rainier Light - Another of the 'new' cans found in Calgary during the week of the CB convention, this 355ml can has been out for some time and considering the re-designed Rainier can came out a year ago, it does make sense. We wondered about the Light can and it's new design now matches that of the Rainier can. It's a mountain scene of Mount Rainier in white, grey and silver with a large red "R" inside a circle on the front of the can. STROH CANADA, DELTA, CANADA V3M 5R5.
Ball Packaging U.S. (2002)

Rainier Strong - Ditto on the Rainier Strong can. This 355ml can now has the Mount Rainier design too and is primarily a black can with gold and red text. The mountain is gold. STROH CANADA, DELTA, CANADA.
Ball Packaging U.S. (2002)

Rickard's Red - While at the Pittsburgh Canvention Doug Logan pointed out a minor variation to the 355ml Rickard's Red can. The current can now has the 'www.molson.com' text added as the last line of text on the side panel. MOLSON CANADA, 5 cities.
Ball Packaging U.S. - Aug., 2003

Rutting Elk Red - This is the other new brand in cans from Canmore, Alberta's Grizzly Paw Brewing Company. It's a similar black 355ml can (as Grumpy Bear) with copper bands around the top and bottom and has a larg Elk on the label. There is a small red Maple Leaf to the right of the label on both sides of the can.
Ball Packaging U.S. - July, 2003

The Brew Works - Here is another can from 2002 that I don't believe we ever reported. It's a 355ml can for The Brew Works, a Victoria, B.C. U-brew store. Dennis Inkster first showed me this can at his house some time ago and I forgot about it until we saw it this July while visiting Calgary's Wildrose Brewing. Thanks to Dave Avdichuk's digital camera, we can tell you it's a gold and black can with "THE BREW WORKS" in large red and white lettering on the front of the can.
Ball Packaging (2002)

T.N.T. - This B.C. brand is now out in a re-designed 355ml can. The 6% BEER is a red can with a black neck. There are circles with small pictures of T.N.T. bombs in the background of the can. The label is white, black and red with large stencilled lettering, 'CAUTION T.N.T. HANDLE WITH CARE.' 'T.N.T. CAUTION' is also printed three times around the neck of the can. PACIFIC WESTERN BREWING CO., PRINCE GEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
CCS-8006 - Aug., 2003

T.N.T. - A new T.N.T. brand with the new design 355ml can came out very shortly after the above can. This can is really a reverse of the colours on the can above with the main colour being a black can with red neck. The difference is this is a 8% STONG BEER. The text on the neck says "NEW EIGHT", printed three times.
CCS-8009 - Aug., 2003

Treebu - This private label brand sold in Quebec & Alberta is out in a nice new design for its 355mL Biere/Beer brand. It's a gold/copper coloured can with a funky graphic around the bottom half of the can and a graphic of eight people above the "TREEBU" brand name. BRASSERIE BEAVERBROOK & CIE LAVAL (QUEBEC) EBOUTEILLE POUR/BOTTLED FOR BRISKA INC., MONTREAL (QUEBEC) H1C 1V6
CCS-9838 - Aug., 2003

Treebu Dry - This is the newest 355mL brand sold in Quebec's Metro stores (& stores in Alberta). Dave Fowler found this can in Montreal recently. It's a blue and orange can with a bunch of hands around the bottom of the can. Strange designs for these two Treebu cans but they are nice.
CCS-9839 - Aug., 2003

Western Bitter - When returning from Calgary Doug & Carolyn Logan visited Great Western Brewing Co. in Saskatoon and discovered their newest brand in cans, that being Western Bitter. This is a 355ml black can in the standard design of their other brands. All of the text on the can is gold. The text on the neck of the can says, 'Enjoy our Exceptionally Smooth, Pefectly Balanced, Full Flavoured Specialty Lager'.
