Successful
design is based on a thorough understanding of market
trends, technological advances and human needs. In order to
achieve the highest standards of product design and human
factors engineering the following Basic Design Guidelines
are followed in the development process:
Understandable
The
product would be understandable to its intended users.
The function of the product would be reflected in the way it
is
designed as overall appearance, and in the design of all
details
such as controls and displays, as well as product
graphics.
Usable
The
product would be obviously usable by its intended users, for
its
intended purpose and in the intended environment. It would
suit the
strengths of the user and will not impose any undue
discomfort or
fatigue iin the course of normal operation.
Functional
The
product would be capable of performing well in its intended
environment and would have sufficient flexibility and
adaptability to meet the changing demands which might
reasonably be expected in that environment.
Attractive
The
product would be aesthetically pleasing in its formal
appearance, form semantics and use of materials and
finishes.
Well Constructed
The
product would inspire confidence by being well constructed
using appropriate materials, manufacturing and engineering
techniques. It would reflect the utmost care taken in its
manufacture and durability for its given function.
Environmentally Compatible
The
product would be capable of integrating with other products
and equipment present in the use environment. It should
neither place undue demands on the environment nor be unduly
sensitive to the likely environment.
Cost-Effective
The cost
of the product should be justified by its performance and
other defined benefits. The cost should take into account
both the initial cost and the long term cost including
maintenance and repair, consumption of energy, life of
product etc.
Safe
The
product must be safe in use and not subject the user or any
other person to risk of injury or damage. It must remain
safe throughout its life and the predictable misuse or
abuse.
