About the Village

The
Humane Village

In September 1993, Canada won formal approval to bring to Toronto the 1997 Congress of the International Congress of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). The winning bid presentation was based on the concept of the "Humane Village". We proposed the Humane Village as a symbol of a place - or enterprise - where people could find themselves able to lead balanced, joyful, re-newing and creative lives. The Humane Village will be compassionate, creative and self-renewing. More than a place, it is a strategy for achieving a newly effective economy and society.

Marshall McLuhan's original description of the Global Village acknowledged the impact on humanity of a world freshly interconnected through global communications. But now that we live in it, we find that the Global Village has preserved all of the parochial borders, suspicions, and hatreds of the isolated village; while at the same time, in the face of aggressive homogeneous international merchandizing we are losing any sense of local cultural flavour or personal connectedness.

We believe that design holds the key to transforming the chilly uniformity of the Global Village into the detailed warmth of the Humane Village. With ethics based on compassion and justice, and a sense of humanity founded on tolerance and commitment, design holds the potential to create, not new objects, but a newly responsible social order.

The myth of continuous material 'progress' has led our society to the edge of cultural, emotional, and ecological bankruptcy. As a counterforce to blind global 'progress', the Humane Village will devise strategies to facilitate the graceful blending of human and natural economies. In the Humane Village the diverse voices of unique local communities join together, not to sing a single note in unison, but to strike a rich harmony of hope and expression.

This discussion is now open to the wider forum. We invite your contributions on design theory, practice, methods and morals, systems of organization. Our discussions must embrace a very wide range of new voices and seasoned experience. You &endash; proven professional or inspired upstart &endash; are required to participate if we are to learn how to understand and make the Humane Village.
