Tools and Development

Because they meet basic needs, tools were the first physical
objects made. Animals make tools; a chimpanzee will strip
leaves from a branch to create a poking stick for collecting ants
from an ant-hill.

Universal design traits characterise all tools. The earliest cutting
and piercing implements, the first surviving expressions of
early civilisation, all share a similar shape, formed by the
imperatives of their use: One end is sharp, the other rounded
to fit the hand.

Changes in tools generally come about in response to new
materials.Contemporary metal knifes may have changed in
shape, but they have not changed at all in the definition
of their use:
One end is sharp, and the other end is
comfortable to hold.

There is no 'ancient' or 'modern' scissor design, but simply
stylistic and material improvements made to the original,
elegant, concept.
