ToolToy Characteristics

Reviewing tools and toys, we have learned the timeless
characteristics that describe ToolToy design criteria.

A ToolToy meets human needs at every level. Its physical tool
aspect is flawless, without frustration to the user. As a tool, it
provides effective powerful performance with long-term
reliability.

It is comfortable and convenient in use; and offers every
precaution to ensure user safety. If fashion or status are
significant aspects of the use of a particular product, then the
ToolToy playfully address these issues with sensitive
long-term solutions.

A ToolToy approach to design also recognises that users
have social needs. Children's playground equipment
facilitates making friends and playing with them in groups.
The design of the park itself must also place benches
overlooking the equipment so that anxious mothers can keep
a watchful overview, and possibly make their own new friends.

Finally, a ToolToy must offer personal meaning to its users.
An object which offers a witty association or surprise,
provides a moment of pleasure beyond the scope of its
ordinary use.

Association with memories gives objects their most significant
personal value. Life-long, childhood memories remain the
most powerful. Products which suggest the forms of the toys
of one's youth bring into vivid recollection the fresh emotions
of those years.
