Multiple Uses of Toys

Toys are multi-purpose as well as multi-sensory. The better
the toy, the more different kinds of play are provoked. A good
toy is not too specific in its use, but suggests alternative
uses, leaving scope for innovation and fantasy.

The simple diagrammatic forms of many toys are not only
aesthetically attractive to children, but also lend themselves
to alternative explanations. The child is free to decide when
a bunny rabbit is also a cat.

Moving parts promote imaginative play. Take a secret drawer
that surprises and requires manual skill to operate. It can
store a rock collection, serve as a bed for the doll, or hold the
treasures of a secret club.

Each toy added to a collection creates new opportunities for
multiple enjoyment. One doll can be nursed and cuddled,
but two can engage in mock argument. The added toy throws
new light on the potential of the old toys.

The lasting popularity of many toys resides in their enduring
multiple uses. A child can be kept busy for days sharpening
sticks with a knife to with which to stir the glowing campfire
in which the shapes of distant cities can be imagined.
Cardboard boxes are as much toys as the objects they
contained, and sometimes more popular.
