Play and Culture

Huizinga believed that culture isderived from play. In play,
he observes the origin of our spirit of enquiry and our respect
for order.

The spirit of play can be seen to underlie many of the
infrastructures of our civilisation, such as law, or military
tactics.

As implements for play, toys reflect the society of their time,
a direct and unadorned record of hopes, fears, and values.

Like tools, toys have assumed an international presence.
The successful toys and games of the twentieth century,
such as Slinky, Frisbee, Monopoly and Scrabble, are
increasingly found in all countries.
