The Characteristics of Play

According to Roger Callois (Man, Play and Games ) ,
play is an activity always freely undertaken. Participation
in play is voluntary; never imposed by physical necessity or
moral duty. Play is unproductive, in the sense that it its own
reward.

Play is separated from other parts of life, occupying
a deliberately set aside space and time within boundaries
agreed upon by the players. Play is governed by rules,
whose absolute order brings a temporary perfection into an
imperfect existence.

The outcome of play is unpredictable, because of the
initiatives or innovations on the part of the players. Play is
make-believe, involving an awareness of its 'unreality.'
Activities or skills which may not be valued in real life may
become assets in play.
