The Pleasure of Play

A wide variety of needs and desires are gratified by different
kinds of playing.

Function Play is the simple repetition of a set of ordered
patterns of movements for their own pleasure, without any
sense of final goal or objective. Similarly, in Movement
Formation Play, patterns of physical movement are created,
such as bouncing a ball, which offer the chance to master an
arbitrary skill and to experience perfection.

In Material Formation Play, or Construction Play, the objective
is to create a piece of work, such as a tower of blocks, for
contemplation.

Fiction Play imitates the action of real life with simple or
complex dramas. Psychological Play can be purely internal,
in the form of amusing thoughts. In Kindheit und Jugend
(Leipzig 1929) Ch. Buhler also mentions Reception Play,
passively looking at pictures, or studying collections.
