The Need to Play

All forms of play and games offer the chance to excel in a safe
forum.Players abandon themselves to obedience to the rules
and the occasional pleasure of circumventing them.
Unused physical or mental aptitudes can find gratifying
outlets in play.

Play may heighten emotions, and create for group bonding.
Whether the emphasis is on physical skill, mental
concentration or escapism, its chief attribute is the escape
from the mundane preoccupations of life.

According to psychoanalytical theories, the two basic
principals of play are pleasure and repetition. In Freud's
observations, play was the expressive form of the
unconscious and served an important role in emotional
development by permitting catharsis.

The need to play is dominant: a kitten will abandon the tastiest
of dinners for catching any toy dangling in front of her eyes.
Many adults will forego sleep or sex in favour of Reception
Play - watching a late night game on TV.

From childhood to adult life into old age, play and its
implements form one continuous thread, without break.
