Learning through Play

Play helps to develop a wide range of skills and abilities
that translate into other areas of life. The challenges of
play stimulates physical and mental skills.

As we have seen, some forms of play stimulate the senses
and emphasise motor abilities. Others stress creative
conceptualisation and planning.

Through
Construction Play, the physical qualities of reality
are grasped and understood: we learn to distinguish order
from chaos, and how to recognise, arrange, measure and
form the raw materials of physical reality to good effect.

Quieter Fiction Play and Psychological Play enhance
emotional stability, by encouraging a general willingness to
deal with the environment, to test specific tactics for coping
with real problems, and to practice social skills in safety.

Play comprising intellectual activity widens knowledge.
Through listening, observing and collecting, play offers
the opportunity to develop new interests, and to define
and differentiate existing ones.
