Product Design

Design for mass production can be described as the process
of making physical matter marketable, by giving it a usable,
recognisable form.

A product is useful when it performs a task. For example, a pair
of scissors cuts paper, and is comfortable to hold. Its form must
also make its use obvious. A shopper has to recognize a pair
of scissors to want to buy them. The product's form alone
has to answer the question:
"What is this?"

Successful products are those that are nevertheless
distinctive. Fiskars scissors are recognisable as such, but
sufficiently different from traditional scissors to attract attention.

Recognition is helped by brand-names, but it is primarily through
design that a product seems 'friendly,' 'stylish,' or 'high quality.'
Usability, recognisability, and distinctiveness are the three
characteristics central to successful ToolToy products.
