Need, Want and Satisfaction

Because they create physical objects, designers think of
needs as having tangible shape. Product design tries
to anticipate and meet the solid, mechanical needs of users.
Wants, in contrast, are felt to be ephemeral and intangible, if not
a kind of self-indulgence, unrelated to good design.
Yet, human wants can be profound.

Human beings crave love and esteem; beauty, pleasure,
and laughter, variety as well as the familiar.
We desire objects which meet our emotional needs,
for when objects go beyond solving mechanical needs,
they perform not only a function necessary to our lives,
but bring satisfaction and a sense of completion
and fulfilment.
