Wellness

Occurring most of the time.

  • Realistic/positive body image
  • Eating & drinking in response to body signals (i.e.: hunger, thirst, satiety)
  • Positive attitude, balance & approach to food choices
  • Positive attitude, balance & approach to physical activity choices
Disordered Eating

Unhealthy behaviours and/or attitudes increase in frequency and/or intensity. Usually, as more energy is spent on unhealthy behaviours and/or attitudes, less energy is available for life’s activities (i.e.: school, work, family, friends, hobbies, etc).

  • Feeling fat, worried about appearance, size, shape
  • Preoccupied with food, weight, exercise, looks
  • Not responding to body signals in regards to fueling (i.e.: eating for comfort, depression, boredom; not eating due to depression; restricting as punishment
  • Postponing or canceling activities due to weight, size, appearance (i.e.: won’t go to the beach)
  • Dieting, restricting, fasting, bingeing, purging, compulsive eating, compulsive exercising
Eating Disorders

The behaviours and attitudes listed under disordered eating are labeled "Eating Disorders", once they have reached diagnosable criteria.

Traditionally, this label has been separated into specific categories.

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder
Prevention

Includes all of the following:

  • Health, fitness & nutrition knowledge
  • Positive body image & self acceptance
  • Awareness of societal pressures, size prejudice & fat phobia
  • Exploration of beliefs, attitudes & ideas about food, exercise & body image
ntervention

Could include:

  • Expressing one’s concern about disordered or negative behaviours, attitudes
  • Discussing or exploring other options to disordered or negative behaviours, attitudes
  • Providing info about resources for support and/or treatment
Support

Could include:

  • Therapy or counseling
  • Peer support
  • Group support
  • Medical advice or support
  • Nutritional support
  • Educational materials or classes
Treatment

Could include:

  • Therapy or counselling
  • Group therapy or support
  • Medical help and treatment
  • Nutritional education or counselling
Hospitalization

Usually occurs only when someone is at extreme medical risk.

he earlier someone is connected to resources, support or treatment for disordered eating/body image issues, the easier and faster the recovery process will usually be.
