Bridport is
situated in south western England in the county of Dorset. By the
13th century, the town had
established itself as a major rope-making centre. On June 23rd
1253, Henry III granted the town its
earliest record Charter when Bridport became a Royal Borough.
Most of Bridport's existing buildings
date from the second half of the 18th century. In 1793, 1800
Bridport people were employed in the rope trade.
Bridport ships carried fishnets, twine and rope to Newfoundland
and Virginia, returned with fish, timber
and tobacco. Huxters in England were and still are farmers.

All of William's
and Elizabeth children were born at Bridport or near by. After
William's death the three
sons left England and sailed to the New World. William landed in
Newfoundland and settled down at
Spaniard's Cove. John landed in Virginia, USA and became a
farmer. There is no record of James.
