"There was a guy at the table who had an interesting play I had never seen before. *****'s offers Late Surrender. What he would do is buy the surrender play from anyone on the table for half their bet. Thus, he would give the player, say $5.00 on a $10.00 bet, take over the bet and instruct them to stand or hit as he chose. If he won he would make 2:1 on his investment. If he lost, he was still only out half the original bet as if he surrendered himself."
This is an amazing concept, especially for counting players. Surrender is not offered in many places, so seldom does a player learn to play the proper Surrender plays, both Basic Strategy Surrender, and the indices for Advanced Plays. As I write this, I am running a simulation with Blackjack Analyzer 5.0 to give you these indices for Hi/Low.
If a player knew when NOT to Surrender and took the players hand for 50% of their bet when they wanted to throw in the towel, this is a great advantage. I would avoid buying a play where the bettor is making the right decision since you will be buying into a largly disadvantaged hand.
Jimske again writes: "Another ploy, which I do use, is similar. Picking up the Insurance bet on an A showing - at the right time." When we learn to count and use this information to help us change or Basic Strategy plays, the first indice we learn is the Insurance one. The reason for this is it equals about 30% of the total advantage we can get by using indices to vary our play. For Hi/Low players betting against 6 and 8 decks this indice is True Count +3.
