| This is a Japanese suicide drawing. Before young Japanese take their own lives, they, as dictated by tradition, must draw themselves minus feet and head, as above, lying down, from behind. Under and over them they must make two bands of colour. The lower band is a colour symbolizing their life and character as they lived on earth. The upper colour is a symbol of what they hope their life and character in its new phase will be. The colours all have traditional meanings. These drawings are cherished by the family and descendants of the dead. |
