DRAWING
I was instructed by my teacher at the time, Hugh L., to "Draw a dream".
This was something I had never considered doing, and I don't think I even
grasped the concept of "Draw a dream", but, amazingly enough, that very night
I had quite a memorable dream, and a particular part of it left a strong
visual impression. In fact, I can still recall this impression as freshly
as if it just occurred, and seventeen years have passed.
In the morning, I awoke with the dream impression, and a huge sense of relief.
As the dream was a night scene, I grabbed the darkest drawing medium I could
find - a product I believe called "Charkole" - a very black substance, and
proceeded to recreate, as accurately as possible, the impression. I remember
being very pleased with the image, and then, breaking all the rules, I began
to write atop the drawing of the events surrounding the vignette I had chosen
to draw. The text reads as follows:
It's night and overhead a plane goes by. It seems
To be having engine problems as it continually
stalls. A flaming object drops out at the
same time as a screaming woman is heard.
Moments later the plane crashes...noiselessly.
I still recall my apprehension in showing Hugh this work. I remember exactly
where I was standing, the dark grey, overcast sky outside, the way I caught
Hugh's attention, and probably even the words I used. I also remember that
he looked at it, smiled, and said, "It's wonderful."
This strange little drawing remains, for many reasons, one of my favorite works.
This drawing is in my collection.
