DRAWING
This drawing was produced on the morning of October 29, 1991. The text on
the drawing reads, "I moved a propane cylinder and found a black scorpion
hiding beneath it." I was having just such a dream when I woke with a start,
this image burned in my mind. The dream occurred just days after returning
from a fiasco in Italy, the lingering angst of this misadventure surfacing in
the form of the scorpion and propane "bombola", both of which can lead to
death in Tuscany - or so I was warned while there.
This drawing used me to produce it. As quickly as I could get to work, it
began to emerge. In my conscious mind, I do not even know what a scorpion
looks like, but, what was in my head emerged on the paper as easily as if
I were actually looking at one. Dry pigments, water, pencil, all worked their
way effortlessly onto the paper. The text, which was not in the dream, but
desired to be there none-the-less, was not so cooperative, and I had to
try to place it twice before it was right. Regardless, this was a fascinating
experience.
My friend, Michael G., a psychology student at the University of Toronto
at the time, was taken by the drawing and its creation. I believe
he did a paper on, "Art as Religious Experience", based on its creation.
Michael had this work on his wall for years, but, understanding its
importance to me, has returned it.
This work is in my collection.
