TECHNICAL PIECES
Copy after Black and White Photo. Oil on Canvas.
The following works will demonstrate the degree to which I've studied and
mastered the traditional craft of painting. I feel very fortunate that I
could venture so far into the academic aspects of the visual arts, experience
as much as I did, but not get caught up in that world. Although it has taken
years to free myself from some of its constricting influences, I feel it has
been a positive thing overall, and has added greatly to my understanding of
art, artists, and the scope of art education.
The work above is a monochrome study of a black and white photograph. The
purpose of such an exercise is to increase one's sensitivity to value and how
its changes and nuances create form. These are the beginning exercises of
academic training.
