CUSTOMS SEIZES CURRENCY, CONTRABAND AND COCK FIGHTING SPURS EL PASO, TEXAS -- The U.S. Customs Service enforces more than 600 laws for 60 different agencies. The diversity of work done at the border was evident the past week as Customs inspectors seized undeclared currency, marijuana, Valium tablets, steroids, cocaine and cock fighting spurs.
![]() Customs inspectors performing inspections at the El Paso ports of entry seized 811 pounds of marijuana in 11 enforcement actions during the week ending October 2. U.S. Immigration and Naturalization inspectors (INS) identified and referred suspicious vehicles that resulted in three of the 11 seizures. Customs inspectors performed a southbound operation at the Ysleta crossing designed to locate weapons, undeclared currency, stolen vehicles, unlicensed technology and other Customs violations on Monday, September 29. The effort resulted in one currency seizure of $10,797 and the recovery of a stolen vehicle. El Paso Customs inspectors seized 5,393 Valium tablets and 670 units of a variety of steroids from a nervous passenger in a taxi cab at the Paso Del Norte Bridge on Saturday, September 27. Customs special agents arrested 31-year-old Russell Wright of Miami, Oklahoma in connection with the smuggling attempt. On Wednesday, October 1 of this past week, Customs inspectors at the Bridge of the Americas found half a pound of cocaine strapped to the body of a bus passenger. The El Paso Sheriff's office arrested 19-year-old Abdel Vega-Gutierrez of Chihuahua, Mexico in connection with the smuggling attempt. Customs inspectors at the Ysleta crossing stopped a man from bringing 16 pairs of cock fighting spurs into the U.S. on Thursday, October 2. The spurs were seized as undeclared and prohibited merchandise and the man was released.
