WWW ... Who What Where?

So what is a URL and why should I care?

somewhere out there ..... You know where you live .... but how will other people find you? They need to know your address!!

And your web site contains html files, and images, and other stuff .... so how will an Internet browser find all that great stuff? Because it finds the address of every one of those bits from the html file from your site.

And for each little thing, the address is - its URL.

Uniform Resource Locator.

The URL is the absolute location of some thing somewhere on the Internet, on some server, in someone's web space, in a folder, in a sub-folder, etc. For example:

a sample URL for an image on this site

how I organize my web site folders/directories ....

And that corresponds to how the files (images, html files, etc.) are organized in our web space. It's a lot easier to maintain that way :)

So what happens if you get the URL wrong?

bad URLYou get this if it's an image, but if it's an html file ...
