Market Day

Many towns have a central square (hauptplatz) where regular markets have been held for centuries. Most towns and cities now have a pedestrian zone where the best shops are located.

Scharding

The buildings are all attached and a gate at each end of the square could have been closed for security.

Burghausen

Burghausen is across the river in Bavaria. The fortress sits above the town and only about half of it is visible in this photo. They wanted 45 euros in a dump so I crossed back into Austria, climbed the hill, and found a room in a private home for 18 euros, including breakfast. The old couple were wonderful.

Passau

Past Burghausen the Salzach joins the Inn (which flows through Innsbruck upstream), then the Inn flows into the Danube at Passau. Architecture in Passau is strongly influenced by Italian style.

Pension Roessner

My room faced the Danube, just behind the moored tour boat. On the next page is the view from my window.
