THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE CALLING A TECH

YOUR COMPUTER NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES BY A FREQUENTLY UPDATED ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM AND A GOOD FIREWALL such as: AVG free antivirus and Zone Alarm free basic firewall.

Good Advice: Turn off Zone Alarm's email checker.  Let your antivirus program check emails.

AN EXCELLENT FREE SPYWARE DETECTOR AND REMOVAL TOOL is Ad-Aware SE.

For greater browsing security and automatic popup stopper, I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox.

KEEP YOUR COMPUTER FREE OF JUNK FILES. Try CCleaner - it's excellent and fast. And it's FREE.

IMPORTANT: Keep all invoices, warranties, software and manuals related to each computer you own, including its add-ons, together in a separate box for each computer system, and store it near the computer for handy access.  Always back up your important files onto diskettes, CD/DVDs, USB flash drive or Zip drive before having your computer serviced.

If you're getting "ERROR" messages, write down exactly what the message said.

COMPUTER WON'T START:
Is the computer plugged in?
Check the computer's power cord.  Unplug and replug at both ends, making sure plugs are pushed completely in.

Is the power switch on the computer turned on?
Check at the back of the computer to find an on/off switch

Is the power bar/surge protector switch turned on?
Has it come unplugged from the wall?

PRINTER, SCANNER, OTHER ADD-ONS WON'T START:
Are all cables and plugs tightly connected?
With the computer OFF, Unplug and replug cables. Then restart computer.

Remember that computer add-ons not only have connector cables and electrical power cords, but often have on/off switches as well.  Follow the cords from each add-on to the computer and to the power sources.  Make sure the cords are not twisted.

If a High Speed Internet connection misbehaves, shut down your computer, unplug the power cord from the high speed modem, or turn off the surge bar your modem is plugged into, wait 30 seconds, then replug the cord, or turn the power bar back on. This allows the modem to re-set itself.  Then re-start your computer.

NO DIAL TONE when using 56K internet dialup:
Make sure modem wire is properly connected at both ends.  Make sure it is in the right jack slot on the computer – the LINE slot, not the "Phone" slot.  See that it is properly connected to the wall jack.  Check the wall jack by plugging a phone into it and listening for dial tone. If you have "Call Answer" you'll need to clear your messages or the modem won't dial.

YOU INSTALLED SOME NEW SOFTWARE BUT IT'S ACTING STRANGE:
1) Always restart your computer after a new installation.

2) If you installed the new software over old software that wasn't working properly, you should uninstall the original software by using the ADD/REMOVE feature in the CONTROL PANEL, re-start your computer, then reinstall the new software.

3) If you're using Windows Vista, you'll find the "uninstall or change a program" feature by clicking on the icon in the CONTROL PANEL that says: "Programs and Features."

COMPUTER RUNNING SLOWER THAN USUAL:

1) If you haven't done the following in a long time, this could be the problem:
Run the Disk Defragmenter:
Go to - START/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter

It's a good idea to run the disk defragmenter once a month or so, or whenever you've been installing and/or removing a lot of programs.

2) Download the latest virus definitions for your antivirus program, and scan your computer to rule out virus activity.

3) Install and run a spyware program
