COMPUTER LAB COURSES WINTER

INTRODUCTION TO THE PERSONAL COMPUTER

“If you’re new to computers, this is the class for you.”

Week 1 The Fundamentals: Starting and logging on.  Using the Mouse. 

Week 2 Working with Windows
: Starting a program. Understanding a Window.
 

Week 3 Working with Windows Programs
: Using menus, toolbars, dialogue box.  Entering text.  Saving and opening files.

Week 4 Working with Files and Folders
: Understanding storage devices, folders and files.  Using My Computer.

Date: Mondays, January 25 - February 22
                            (4 classes, no class Feb. 15)
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Cost: $55.00 members, $60.00 non-members

 

INTERNET COURSE

“The Internet: Worlds to Explore!”

Pre-requisite: Introduction to the Personal Computer or equivalent experience.

Week 1 Exploring the Internet:  Introduction to the Internet.  What is a browser.  Web pages and the information bar. 

Week 2 Exploring the Aspects:
 Surfing, information and news blogs.  Chatting, Internet phone and entertainment (world radio & TV).  Shopping.  Free software.  Downloading and printing pictures & files.

Week 3 A Deeper Look
: Searching the internet, the proper procedures.  Installing free tools for Internet multimedia (movies, music & international live radio).

Week 4 E-mail: Internet e-mail set up and use.  Adding a name to the address book.

Week 5 Finding Free Resources: Finding free tools for security and computer safety.

Date: Tuesdays,  January 26 - February 23 (5 classes)
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Cost: $65.00 members, $70.00 non-members

 

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL NETWORKING - NEW!

Week 1:  Introduction to the Personal Computer Social Networking Services (Microsoft Live Messenger, Skype, Blogs, Fliker, Facebook, Twitter) and others.

Week 2: Social Networking:  Joining a Social Working Service; Sharing on Social Networks.

Week 3:  Individual Projects.  Using Social Networking Media Programs.  Linking to Social Networks.  Sharing blog content with your Network.

Week 4: Completing individual projects and review.  Creating and uploading media to share.

Date: Wednesdays,  January 27 - February 17 (4 classes)
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Cost: $55.00 members, $60.00 non-members

 

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Photograph Correction & Free Tools: “Here’s where you can learn to repair old photographs or touch up a new digital photograph.”

Pre-requisite: Introduction to the Personal Computer or equivalent experience

Week 1 Your Camera: Intro to the Digital Camera.  Transferring digital photos to the computer. 

Week 2 Editing Your Images:  Where to get free tools.  Using a scanner (bring a picture to scan).  Photoshop and Paintshop Pro. 

Week 3 Your Project Needs: Colour and the computer. Project commencement: repair a photo (you repair a personal photo).

Week 4 Project Completion & Review

Date: Thursdays,  January 28 - February 18 (4 classes)
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Cost: $55.00 members, $60.00 non-members


Reginal Cottle received Webmaster Applications certification from Digital Media Studios in 1997 and 3CISSP certification in internet security granted by Watchfire in 2007.  A trainer as well as past project manager for a youth internet HRDC training program, he also holds among other certifications, one in hospitality from The Royal Bank and in programming.  His community involvement for almost a decade now focuses on the growth of the individual within the community with courses to introduce others to the usefulness of the computer.  He actively teaches at a Toronto-based community centre and works within the computer field.
