System Notes

The terminal program connects to the main computer using a peer to peer ethernet network.  The network provides current data from the main computer to the terminal computer.  The terminal never opens or modifies the original files on the main computer.  All operations are on the terminal computer.

A touch mouse is used.  The touch mouse works by moving the pad of your finger around on the surface of the mouse.  Pressing hard will cause the cursor to jump around.  Lightly tap the surface to click.

The program boots automatically when the computer is turned on.  Three levels of security are provided to prevent problems.  Data can only be read from one directory of the main computer.  There is no method of running programs without passing security.  Security access is controlled with a password and 2 forms of hardware checks.  A disk must be inserted into the computer that is in a locked cabinet, and a security button must be touched to the reader.

Using The Software

Turn the computer on.  Members follow the on screen prompts to use the software.  If something is not done correctly, the software will recover.  It was requested that details of certain functions be explained below in a question and answer format.

Common Questions:

Q How to I start the system in the morning?

A Turn on the main computer first.  After the main program has started, turn on the terminal computer.  It will start the software automatically.  The computer will store all of the information for each member from the previous day.  This process will take several minutes since it must update all of the members in the terminal database for each day of the year.  It is then ready to use when the Login screen appears.  Make sure the main computer has 're-rank member information after each game' selected.

Q How to I get to the System Setup Screen?

A At the Login screen, touch the security button to the button reader.  A new screen will ask you for the System Setup password.  Unlock the cabinet and insert the security control disk into the computer.  The program will not ask you for the disk.  As you type in the password, a hidden character symbol will appear.  If you make a mistake, the Login screen will appear and you must start over.  The System Setup panel will appear.

Q How to I shut down the system at the end of the day?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see above).  Click the Shut Down button.  Wait until the screen is blank (the mouse cursor will still move) and the hard drive light stops flashing (or wait 10 seconds).  Turn the terminal computer off.  Now leave the main computer on or shut it down normally.

Q Why does the system need to be shut down at the end of each day?

A Since the computer recalculates the member information when it is started, it needs to be turned off first so it can be turned on.  The computer uses the score information at the start of the day to update the member daily information for yesterday.  If the computer is not restarted, the member's will have a day without any scores in the Daily Information grids and graphs.

Q How do I restart the computers during the day?

A You only need to do this if a question's answer told you to do this, or if one of the computers have crashed.  If you are able to, exit the terminal program properly.  Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Setup Screen?).  Click the Shut Down button.  Wait until the screen is blank (the mouse cursor will still move) and the hard drive light stops flashing (or wait 10 seconds).  Turn the member computer off.  If there was a problem with the main computer, shut it down now.  Turn the main computer back on first if it was shut down.  When it ready, turn on the terminal computer.  Important:  Since member score information changes during the day (as members play games), click on the No Update button until it says Aborting... on the Please Wait screen.  This will tell the program not to change the daily rank information.  It will proceed to the Login screen and run normally.

Q How do I change the border and title colours?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Control Setup?).  Click on the Control Panel button.  When the program loads, click on Colours.  Select the colours you want and then exit the Control Panel program.  Do not leave the Control Panel running when members have access to the terminal computer.

Q How do I change the background picture?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Control Setup?).  Shut down the program.  Click on the Control Panel button.  When the program loads, click on Desktop.  Select the background you want and then exit the Control Panel program.  Do not leave the Control Panel running when members have access to the terminal computer.

Q How do I change the pictures in the ad boxes?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Setup?).  Select a screen from the selection box.  Click on Change.  Select a file by clicking on Change Picture.  Click Done to exit.  Exit the System Setup screen.

Q How do I create my own pictures for the ad boxes?

A On a different computer, run a paint program that allows you to save or export to a bitmap file.  The Paintbrush program is one of them.  Create a bitmap that is 450 pixels wide and 150 pixels high.  The program will display the image in 16 colour mode.  To do this in Paintbrush, click on the Options menu and then click on the Image Attributes.  Select pels (pixels) in the Units box.  Enter 450 for the Width and 150 for the Height.  Click OK.  Draw your image and then save it in the SA directory.

Q How do I create my own pictures for the background?

A On a different computer, run a paint program that allows you to save or export to a bitmap file.  The Paintbrush program is one of them.  Create a bitmap that is 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels high.  The program will display the image in 16 colour mode.  To do this in Paintbrush, click on the Options menu and then click on the Image Attributes.  Select pels (pixels) in the Units box.  Enter 640 for the Width and 480 for the Height.  Click OK.  Draw your image and then save it in the windows directory.

Q How do I get my own drawings on the terminal computer?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Setup?).  Shut down the program.  Run a file manager program or command prompt to copy your picture file to the SA directory.  Copy your backgrounds to the windows directory.  Remember to virus scan your disk.  See How do I change the pictures in the ad boxes? or How do I change the background picture?

Q How do I know which way to exit System Setup?

A To exit the System Setup screen and return to the Login Screen, click Log out.  Make sure no other programs are running before you do.  To shut down the system (so you can turn off the computer), see How to I shut down the system at the end of the day?

Q What is the System Setup password?

A The password is not written down.  The site owner knows the password and that person will tell you.  Do not tell anyone else the password, or write the password down.  A charge will apply to create a new password.

Q How do I add a forum?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Setup?).  Type in the new forum name in the Create Forum box with proper capitalization.  Click the Add Forum button to create it.  Click OK when you are asked to confirm.  The forum name can be up to 50 letters (including spaces) long.  You can have up to 32700 different forums.

Q What are some suggestions for the forums?

A Make forums that appeal to specific groups and others that appeal to everyone.  There should be specific forums for little kids, teenagers, young adults, adults, and parents.  A forum name should be clear so members understand what the forum is about.  A forum cannot also be too specific, since very few (if any) messages would be posted to it.  There also cannot be any forums that parents would object to if their children were to see them.  Some suggestions are:

-Announcements
-Comments about the site
-Computer game tips/tactics or opinions
-Cool Internet sites
-Game challenges to other members
-Home / Garden tips
-Items wanted
-Items for sale
-Local school / college news / events
-Local events
-Local sporting events
-Lost pets
-Member's nights
-Movie opinions
-Music reviews
-News about the site
-Opinions on government
-Opinions on international events
-Personals
-Suggestion box
-Theme game suggestions
-Used cars available / wanted

Q How do I remove a forum?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Setup?).  Select the forum you want to delete in the Delete Forum box.  Click the Delete Forum button to remove it.  Click OK to confirm.  If you add a forum that was deleted, all of the posted items will come back for the forum.  To remove the old items, see How do I remove old messages from a deleted forum?

Q How do I remove old messages from a deleted forum?

A Go to the System Setup screen (see How to I get to the System Setup?).  Click on the purge forums button.  Click OK when you are asked to confirm and you are sure you want to do this.  You cannot recover the old messages from deleted forums when you do.  This process will reduce the forum database size and increase its speed.

Q An error screen appeared.  What do I do now?

A The error recover screen explains what to do.  Follow the instructions.  It is very important to fill out a "Error Notice" so the problem can be corrected.  This notice is towards the end of this manual.  Keep several copies at the reception desk.  Do not call the programmer.  At the terminal computer, the first step is to click the Retry button to see if the program can recover automatically.  If this does not work, click the Ignore button try and skip the problem.  Try clicking each several times.  If the message does not go away, click the Abort button.  The program end.  Reboot the computer when the hard drive stops flashing (or wait 10 seconds).  If the program will not restart, someone has changed the setup in one of the computers, or the network cable has been cut, or hardware has failed.  A person with computer knowledge should try to determine this.  The programmer can only help with problems with the program.  If the program was working before, (i.e.. yesterday), the something other than the program has changed.

Q Can I do anything about certain errors?

A If the error screen comes up with one of following "Error Numbers", follow the steps given.

Error Number = 7, 14, 28, 28670, 30006, 32758, or 32765
Insufficient memory or resources are available.  Other programs may have been installed on the terminal computer.  Remove them.

Error Number = 48
One of the drivers for the program has been deleted or modified.  Use the terminal program disks to replace them.

Error Number = 52, 53, 57, 68, 70, 75, or 76
Make sure the main computer was turned on first and their are no messages about network problems came up.  See How do I restart the computer during the day?

Error Number = 61
The hard drive is full on the terminal computer.  Boot with the emergency disk and check the SA directory for subdirectories starting with 00 and delete them.  These directories are backup copies of the terminal files when a error occurred.  They are used by the programmer for recreating errors for debugging a new version.  Also, delete old bitmap pictures that you are not using.

Error Number = 481
A invalid picture was selected for an ad box.  Select a new picture in the System Setup for the screen the error occurred.  See How do I change the pictures in the ad boxes?
