Motion The CUPE 1230 Executive has approved the following motion for the November 18th General Membership Meeting. WHEREAS there have not been any political arrests ON THE U OF T CAMPUS since our strike in 1991, and before that since 1972, during occupations at Simcoe Hall AND WHEREAS student protest here at U of T, as well as elsewhere nationally and internationally is growing AND WHEREAS student protest and the right to demonstrate is being met with increasing violence and discrimination on the part of the police as instructed by the state AND WHEREAS this stepped up attack on protesters has affected one of our members, Tom Reid, LT4 in Rare Books, who was arrested on October 16, 1998 at a student demonstration at Queen's Park on a false charge of assaulting a U of T police officer TEN DAYS EARLIER at a demonstration at Hart House, which was held to protest the Tory fundraising dinner with the minister of privatization and other corporate donors who are being ushered in by the government and by Prichard to radically alter the University for the worse AND WHEREAS Tom is now facing this serious charge of assault and awaits trial AND WHEREAS Tom is innocent and is being victimized by this charge, BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED That CUPE 1230 contribute 500 dollars towards Tom's legal fees AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the Local endorse his defense campaign and offer our full support in the upcoming months to help him with his case. |
