How I became a junkie

I tried to fight it. I tried to be strong. I held off as long as I could but I finally caved as, this week, I bought a DVD player.

I can rationalize it, of course -- so many people are getting hooked up that I'm just running with the pack, you know? According to the U.S. Consumer Electronics Association, 8.5 million DVD players were sold in the year 2000 alone: "Few video introductions have captured the attention of U.S. consumers as powerfully or as quickly as DVD," says their website, "The category was introduced in March 1997, delivering a system that immediately represented the new benchmark in high-quality video and sound reproduction."
