He holds a Master of Social Work degree and supplementary training in self-help leadership and human sexuality counselling. He has received awards for academic distinction and is a co-author of "Deafened Adults: Adjustment and Support" to be published in the fall of 2000. A former board member of the Association of Late-Deafened Adults, he serves in an advisory capacity on various public committees and panels. He has lectured at York University and various professional conferences, and provides consulting services and education internationally for deafened people and those who provide services to them, as well as policy research, planning, and community consultation.

Kathryn is the host of The Deafened People Page, a renowned and unique Internet source of information on deafened people. The first deaf woman to receive a PhD in engineering, she is a researcher in fields of deafness, ergonomics and safety, and had previously held an executive position in a large community hospital. A former board member of the Association of Late-Deafened Adults, The Canadian Hearing Society, and several professional groups, she has received the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship and other awards for outstanding community service and has served on numerous committees, boards, and panels. Presently an adjunct professor of engineering at the University of Waterloo, she has also taught at Rochester Institute of Technology, and has spoken around the world to academic and community audiences on many different topics. In addition to holding a managerial appointment in the public service, she consults widely on projects related both to deafness and disability, and to ergonomics and safety.
