At marriage, William was described as a tinner. Later, he was a coalmerchant, farmer and owner of a hotel, The Crown, in Goldsithney. Whenhe died in Veryan, he left an inheritance of six hundred pounds,equivalent to about one hundred thousand dollars in current money.
Thomas left Cornwall for New Zealand. The SS Clifford sailed fromGravesend, London, on Dec 13, 1841 and arrived in New Zealand on May 11,1842. There he worked as a carpenter/joiner. After a few years, he leftfor Tasmania and the gold rush on the mainland but the next gold rushtook him to San Francisco, arriving there on June 1, 1850. Another goldrush in the Fraser River Valley of British Columbia attracted him and hefinally ended up in Victoria, British Columbia in 1858. He was anarchitect and designed and built the Police Barracks in 1858 the navalstorehouse and the first Methodist Church in the city. His house"Tregew" which he built in James Bay in 1861 was said to be the firststone house in Victoria. Thomas was the Chairman of the Charlotte IslandCoal Company and had an inlet on the Queen Charlotte Islands named afterhim in 1945. He was elected to the city council in 1875 and isremembered today as the businessman who donated Trounce Alley to the city("It was the intention of the government that View Street run through tothe harbour, but in 1858 the portion from Broad to Government was closedoff and sold. Trounce in his annoyance with all officialdom, made analley through his property to facilitate traffic"). He was a keengardener, having one of the first greenhouses and even won a medal inLondon, England in 1885 for his apples. He was buried in Breage,Cornwall, England.
