Gerald was born and raised in London, England. He came to Canada in1922, with a group of boys and girls under the protection of theMarchmont Home of Belleville. His grandmother had raised him after hismother died of tuberculosis. She sent him to a school at Ashford beforesending him to Canada to seek a better life.
