Mason-Ed
"Masons for
Education"
The "MASON-ED" programme was conceived at a
Committee of General Purposes meeting during the autumn of 1996 as a means to reward the
youth of the community in which our Masonic home is located. Bro. James McKinnon was
elected as the first chairman. It was also recognised that this would be an
appropriate vehicle to expose Freemasonry to the community in general. A bursary
programme consisting of five $100.00 cheques would be awarded to deserving students.
Bro. McKinnon selected D.A. Morrison, Junior High School and
contacted the principal, Mr. John Kearns. Between them they decided on the following
criteria by which to select the students:
- Showing consideration for others and demonstrating honesty,
fairness, kindness, understanding and courtesy.
- Participates in organisations, agencies, clubs and teams in
the school and/or community.
- Committed to learning and the school programme.
The first awards were presented by
Worshipful Brother Gary Liddell at the "Grade Nine Recognition Night," held a
D.A. Morrison School on Jun 12, 1997. Also in attendance were Bro. James McKinnon,
W. Bro. Keir MacMillan, and R.W. Bro. Darwin Willoughby.
All brethren of Tuscan Lodge, No. 541 contribute to the programme
by donations of money and time during fund raising activities.
