A note
from Dr. Mezei…
I would like to convey some information that may be helpful to you with
regards to MVA's (motor vehicle accidents).
First you should know that your health care following an accident is covered
by your auto insurance policy. The law indicates that you are entitled
to a minimum of fifteen chiropractic visits without approval from your
insurance company.
The "No-Fault" Misconception
The following statement is representative of the confusion surrounding
the terms "no-fault" insurance:
I am afraid to get treatment for my injuries because my auto insurance
rates may increase due to "no-fault" insurance.
I often hear such statements made by patients. It is important to understand
the nature of the coverage provided by your insurance policy. Your
rates will not increase if the accident was not your fault. This is
true regardless of whether or not you receive chiropractic therapy, acupuncture,
or massage therapy. Similarly, if you are assessed any liability (i.e.
fault) in an accident your rates may increase regardless of whether or
not you receive treatment for your injuries.
The bottom line is don't take risks with your health and well being. Have
yourself examined after an accident and make sure you put your health
first!
Many patients complain about neck pain they have had after being involved
in a motor vehicle accident years and years ago. They never received proper
treatment, and now they regret it. As a rule, the longer an injury goes
untreated the greater the likelihood it may become a chronic problem.
No Referral Required
It is important to note that few health care practitioners are as helpful
as a chiropractor in the case of a motor vehicle accident. The chiropractor
can manage every aspect of your case - from diagnosis and treatment, to
the preparation of documents required in case of a legal settlement.
It has come to my attention that some motor vehicle accident victims have
been directed to a particular practitioner by their claims adjuster. This
kind of active referral (i.e. to a certain kind of practitioner) is inappropriate.
As the patient and the insured, you have the right to choose whom you
wish to treat your injuries and manage your case.
Please note that through the Workplace Safety Insurance Board a chiropractor
can also manage your case if you suffer an injury during the course of
your employment. Similarly, chiropractors are also able to manage any
personal injury claim.
Here's to your health,
Dr. Mezei.
