In 1955, from an initiative of the then Chairman of the Polish Canadian Congress, Toronto District, Mr. Andrzej Janicki a Committee for the Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the death of Adam Mickiewicz was formed. General Emil Przedrzymirski became the chairman, and Mr. Wojciech Krajewski the secretary of the Committee.
In February of 1956, at the Committee's final meeting a sum of $2,500.00 has been left at its disposal. This was the beginning of the future A. Mickiewicz Foundation. Due to his age, General Przedrzymirski did not want to accept the position of the chairman of the new organization, and proposed the former secretary, Mr. Wojciech Krajewski.
The founding members chose the name of the organization, worked out a set of objectives, and elected the board of directors as follows:
The organization had an operating budget of $2,500.00. The above directors became the pillar of the still existing and prospering organization.
In 1963, it received its federal character as a nonprofit, cultural organization, by the name "The Adam Mickiewicz Foundation".
The activities of the Foundation are manifold. Some of those activities are: providing standard grants and financial support for students of Polish origins studying at Canadian universities, helping various libraries and printing houses, assisting in the development of contacts between universities in Poland and in Canada, organizing lectures in Polish and English.
