The noise of the previous night was soon explained when I walked into the kitchen early in the morning. Sarah, the cook, was not there yet. However, someone had certainly been busy during the night. There was a general mess lying in front of the kitchen fireplace. Bricks and mortar had been pried out of one section leaving a gaping hole. Oddly, a Carnation was stuck at the top of the heap.

A second look told me that the kitchen woodbox had also been emptied out onto the floor. My early rising might not help in cleaning up a mess like this before we had to prepare breakfast for the guests.

I had half-finished the cleaning when the cook, Sarah, came in. She saw how tired and cranky I was, and ordered me back to my room. She said she would finish the job and handle breakfast quite well, thank you.

I awoke again just before lunch and decided to join the guests in the Trillium Room, the dining room at Castlefield.
