What To Do, What To Be!

1 Getting up before the crack of dawn
Duty calls and I must respond
This wouldn't be nearly so bad a day
If my car hadn't suddenly quit yesterday.

2 Trying to sort it all out in my head
I list some facts as I climb out of bed.
I mentally note my talents and skills
And wonder why I can't pay the bills.

3 A trainer, liaison, innovator too--
Communicator, writer, keeping up with what's new.
Designer, musician, editor as well
But there aren't any jobs for one who can spell!

4 Language and grammar are important to me
Lack of their use has become a "pet peeve"
Bad spelling and improper form of word
Depletes good expression whether read or heard.

5 And what about skills experts label as "soft"
"Works well with others" and "adapts to the job"?
Jargon and phrases can hardly portray
My involvement and effort expended each day.

6 Pride and self-worth, and knowing you've done
The best you can do, may be corny to some
But those who miss it must fail to receive
Motivation and zeal from what they achieve.

7 Learning new things is also a joy
Acquiring more gifts and skills to employ
I like to make use of computers and such
Embracing technology keeps me in touch.

8Personality also must come into play
Just as attitude and outlook affect what I say
And knowing that humour refreshes the soul
I liberally add it to life as a whole.

9 So how will I find a niche of my own
Where I may contribute, or blend, or hone
A skill set so varied, experience too--
Caring and sharing in all that I do?

10 If background, experience, or penchant don't count
Would someone please show me which road to mount?
Enthusiasm and optimism still fill my cup
But I don't know what to be, when I grow up!

11 I'll give it my all -- I really will
I just need a purpose, some role to fill
Then cheerfully facing the task at hand
To lead or support -- I will take a stand.

12 For honour is something we cannot attain
By demanding our "dues" or "playing the game."
The secret is knowing wherein it lies
Quietly working; enhancing lives.

13 "To thine own self be true" is a phrase to recall
Whenever you're faced with a job big or small
For the unselfish meaning is deep and true
Humility's reward -- is honour for you.
