Who should attend:

This workshop will be of special interest to organizations who deliver, are planning to deliver or evaluate the delivery of professional services.   Nurse managers, program managers, clinical resource nurses, case managers, and direct care providers from acute care, long-term care, public health, and community services would find this practical process for establishing and maintaining competency-based service delivery useful as part of their practice.   Anyone responsible for performance management and continuous quality improvement would benefit from this workshop.

    About the Program:

    This workshop has been designed to provide participants with an opportunity to "fill in the gaps" as nursing services move to a competency-based practice model.    The program utilizes didactic presentation, small group work, as well as individual work and is designed to be experiential, practical, and an enjoyable opportunity to experience the steps to competency-based service delivery.

    About the Facilitators

    Heather Bruce, R.N., B.Sc. N.
    Heather has an extensive background in health care including staff and management positions in acute care and community services.   As a senior manager of service delivery in the private and public sectors, she has developed a performance management system that has been successfully applied to the provision of competency-based service delivery.   As a speaker at provincial and national conferences, Heather has made presentations on "Enhancing Nursing Services," "Performance Management," "Opportunity Analysis," and most recently at the 1997 CINA Conference, "Competency-based IV Services."   Heather is a regular speaker for the middle management series on Telemedicine Canada.   Most recently, Heather was Director of Nursing Services for a national home health care organization and is currently Program Manager - Client Services for a community care access centre.

    Sharon Rodkin, R.N., CINA(c)
    Sharon's experience has included staff and management positions in acute care, community, and long-term care organizations in both Canada and the United States. She has an extensive background in IV services, holding numerous positions on the board of the Canadian Intravenous Nurses Association (CINA).
    Her positions have included Director of Nursing in a Toronto teaching hospital, Director of IV Services where she developed quality improvement tools to assess performance and monitor practice. More recently, Sharon was a Team Leader in a national home health care organization where she was involved in performance management. She is currently a Nurse Clinician in a long-term care setting.
