Working at the University of Toronto, these two eventually discovered the first treatment for diabetes. Diabetes for people was a death sentence for thousands each year. Their lifesaving discover saved millions of lives and earned Banting a Nobel Prize, an honour he shared with his co-researcher Best.

Banting died in a plane crash in 1948 performing an project for the national government. Banting's career eventually took him to the head of the medical department at University of Toronto.
