Dr. Jennie Smillie Robertson
1878 - 1981

Canada's first woman surgeon and co-founder of Women's College Hospital.

She attended University of Toronto's Medical school during very male dominated and prejudiced times. Upon graduating in 1909 she was forced to intern in the Philadelphia, since no institutions accepted female interns at that time.

Frustrated by the lack of serious study and care of "women's concerns", they took matters into their own hand . In 1911 she and several other women doctors opened the original Women's College Hospital.

Jennie Robertson was the first woman in Canada to perform a gynecological operation.
