Wow. I was thrilled to hear from her. She told me that you had a group that was involved in tracing these names. My Great Grandmother was Jane Ann Eamer, and I think she was the oldest daughter of Jacob Eamer. Jacob was in Montague Twp. Lanark Co. and I have a lady in Ottawa who is trying to tie in my Jane Ann with Jacob. Jacob was married twice , once to Hannah Cryderman in about 1820 and then to Ann McQuay in 1826. I have been recently corresponding with a lady in Winnipeg who is also working on these names. Then there is another lady in Wainfleet , Ontario who contacted me and she sent 7 generations of Crydermans to me, by email. Also, I had written to Robert Eamer who is President of Domtar, I think, and he lives in Quebec. Two years ago, I could not make a connection with him, but now I can, and I am waiting to hear from him again. So, there are lots of irons in the fire on these lines, right now. I also think the Barnhart name enters into all of this, according to the lady in Winnipeg. So, I won't ramble on here, but will wait to hear from you, as to what you want me to do. Sounds like fun. I have been doing genealogy for 30 years now. Cheers Jean Lawon BARRIE, Ontario jlawson@barint.on.ca "Help! Our Genealogy Society received permission to photocopy the records for Woodlawn Cemetery in Cornwall. That is the largest and oldest interdenominational cemetery in town. I have just started working my way through the "Gs" and am having a great time. There are many Gallingers who were buried without stones and so going through the records is the only way to find them. The tough part is the women who where registered as Mrs. Simeon Gallinger. Very nice I'm sure, but WHAT was her maiden name? It takes a lot of work to track these women down and sort out WHO they are. Today's Cornwall Standard Freeholder, Monday, Feburary 17, 1997 had a Gallinger wedding announcement which reads as follows: Harold and Ramona Gallinger are happy to announce the marriage of their son Michael Gallinger to Bettyann Tothfaluse, daughter of the late Andy and Betty Tothfaluse of Cornwall. The marriage took place on October 5, 1996 at Trinity United Chuch, Ingleside, Ontario. The couple now reside in Cornwall. regards Lily jworrall@cnwl.igs.net ============================================== Date: Fri, 21 Feb 1997 10:31:30 -0500 (EST) X-Sender: jworrall@host.cnwl.igs.net From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (Lily/John Worrall) Subject: Gallinger Will Content-Length: 3507 Hi, I had a list of the information I had sent to everyone and now I cannot find it anywhere. If this is a repeat of earlier e-mails, I do apologize. I just wanted to make a little noise for Shaun. (grin) I've just done a lot of work on the family of Philip IRA Gallinger this week and thought his will interesting. Philip left his farm to his wife - but only for as long as she remained his widow! or until she died. There is something very irksome about people who want to control lives even from beyond the grave. I find the name Hercy very odd but the will is typewritten and that is exactly what it says. It just feels like the name should be Percy. In any case Ira did not have much confidence in him ashe threatens to withold his inheritance if certain steps aren't fulfilled. Will of Philip Ira Gallinger This is the last Will and Testament of me Philip Ira Gallinger of the Township of Finch in the County of Stormont, Farmer, made this sixth day of March A.D. 1924. I revoke all former wills or other testamentary dispositions by me at any time heretofore made and declare this only to be and contain my last will. I also give and bequeath to my wife Annie Gallinger for and during the remainder of her natural life or so long as she reamins my widow, my farm in the Township of Finch in the County of Stormont, being composed of the East half of the West half of Lot number twelve in the First Concession of the aforesaid Township and from and immediately after her decease or second marriage said real estate shall become the property of my son Hercy Gallinger, subject however to the legacies in favour of my daughter Ella May Putney and my grandson Gordon Putney as hereinafter mentioned. I also give and bequeath to my son Hercy Gallinger all farm implements and machinery which I may own at the time of my death. I will and direct that my daughter Ella May Putney and my grandson Gordon Putney be entitled to reside in the house on the hereinbefore described lands so long as my said wife resides thereon and shall be entitled to the sole use and control of not less than two bedrooms in the said house. I will and direct that my funeral expenses be paid by my son Hercy Gallinger and should my said son neglect or refuse to pay such funeral expenses he shall not be entitled to any benefits under this my will. I give and bequeath to my said daughter Ella May Putney the sum of one thousand dollars and to my grandson Gordon Putney the sum of Five Hundred dollars such legacies to be paid by my said son Hercy Gallinger within three months after the death or second marriage of my wife, and I make the payment of the said legacies a charge upon the real estate hereinbefore devised to my said son Hercy Gallinger. All the rest and residue of my property both real and personal I give and bequeath to my said wife Annie Gallinger absolutely. I nominate and appoint my said wife Annie Gallinger and my son Hercy Gallinger to be executrix and executor of this my will. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the day and year first above written. Signed, published and declared by the said Philip Ira Gallinger the testator, as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who present together at the same time, at his request, in his sight and presence and in the sight and presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. I am finding the information very interesting. I am now living here in Michigan, but relocated from Connecticut several years ago. My father whose name was Archie passed away last year. We were aware of the little village of Gallingertown in Ontario. We had a newspaper article that came from there many years ago. My grandfather (father's father) originally came from upper New York state. His name was Alonzo Gallinger. He passed away back in 1947. He and his wife Julia, relocated from upper N.Y. to eastern Connecticut back in the 30's, I believe. Someday I would like to get up to the Cornwall area and go to Gallingertown if it is still there. I know the St. Lawrence Seaway passes quite close to that area, I think. Hopefully, I can find more information about our family history here online. Sincerely, Bruce Gallinger ========================================== Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 22:25:49 -0500 (EST) From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (Lily/John Worrall) Subject: Welcome Bruce Gallinger Content-Length: 2892 Hi Bruce, Welcome to the Gallinger Group! I have two Alonzo Gallingers in my file at present. Unfortunately I have very little information on either one - the first was born ca 1864. He is the son of Philip GALLINGER 26 Mar 1824 - 6 Dec 1905 and Elizabeth HOOPLE 1824-1867. Philip and Elizabeth were married 28 Sep 1847 and had 12 children. The second Alonzo may have a twin brother Guy. I say "may" because there is a possibility that Alonzo Guy is just one person and not two people born on the same date. This Alonzo is the son of George H. GALLINGER 13 Feb 1825-16 Oct 1917 and Mary Ann DAILY 6 Jul 1833 - 15 Jan 1914. Geroge and Mary were married 23 Sep 1851 and had 9 or 10 children (depending on the twinness of Alonzo/Guy.) I checked all the siblings in both families. Only in the second family (George & Mary) did one daughter Adelide M. GALLINGER marry and American Allen MORGAN - he resided in Syracuse in 1924 - but this shows that the family did have American contacts. Do you have any other information on your Alonzo? Do you know when he was born? Is it marked on his tombstone, written up in his obituary? Do you know where in upper New York state your Alonzo lived? Our Gallinger Tree has spread across Canada and all through the United States. People didn't have passports or border crossings "back then" and if they heard there were jobs in a certain area they just picked up and moved there. Gallingertown still exists. This summer I drove Highway #2 daily and the sign to Gallingertown pointed north (I'm sure it's not more than 10 miles north) but somehow I never turned the wheel to go looking. I understand that in the past it was just a crossroads with a church and few houses and school along the road. I believe a more modern "subdivision" has been added although the church has been closed. Makes me wish I had gone looking but when you are on a tight schedule it's hard to detour. Gallingertown is within 10 miles of Upper Canada Village. This is an historic park-village which was built at the time of the Seaway flooding. It has churches, meeting halls, a school, a cheese factory, a saw mill, a woolen mill and many homes - all faithfully restored ca 1860. The village is open from May until October. There are "interpreters" who work there daily, quilting, printing a newspaper, gardening, putting horseshoes on horses, making tinware. feeding chickens and ducks in the mill pond.etc. It's a grand place to visit and you can spend 1-2 days walking through it. There is also a miniature train which will take you around the monument of the Battle of Crysler Farm. All very interesting. So if you ever do make it to Ontario and go looking for Gallingertown be sure to add Upper Canada Village on your "must-see" list! Perhpas some of the other researchers in our Gallinger Group can add to the above. Bruce wrote--- ))We know that Alonzo Gallinger was born 25 May 1865. The place of ))Winchester Springs, Ontario. (Think perhaps he either was born there or ))grew up there.) He left home at an early age - believed to be at 17. He ))had a stepmother who was supposedly French and mean to him [Bruce the ))1871 census shows the second wife as being Irish!). He moved down into NY ))state and moved around quite a bit buying a farm, and farming in each ))location. His various addresses included Chaplain, Connecticut, ))Enfield/Thompsonville, Connecticut, and even the Keene, New Hampshire ))area. ))Alonzo married on Feb. 17, 1908 Julia Nyhan (1879-1952). Looks like they ))may have married in Massena N.Y. Ogdensburg, N.Y. is also mentioned. ))Think that may be the first town they settled in after marriage. As you ))can see, she was quite a bit younger than him. They had two children, ))Their first son was James David Nyhan Gallinger born Nov. 15, 1908 and ))second child was Archie who is my father. Lily's reply-- A name typed like "Philip IRA GALLINGER" means he called himself Ira Gallinger. I have given the dates as I have them (some births are just an approximate year (ca 1867 means about 1867). If the wedding date is missing, it means I don't have it :-( I hope Bruce will be pleased to know that he is part of a very large Gallinger family. Alonzo who left home at 17 years (ca 1882) had 7 brothers and sisters and as the years went by Alonzo had at least 18 nieces and nephews. He also had four step-siblings. The family is large and yet most of them still reside within the area of Cornwall/Gallingertown. Winchester Springs still exists. It is a small gathering of attractive old-fashioned houses along Highway #31. It is about 8 miles equi-distant between the villages of Morrisburg (on the St. Lawrence) and Winchester about 16 mi N of Morrisburg. Today, traffic doesn't even slow down for Winchester Springs. If you leave Morrisburg and travel east along the St. Lawrence River you see the northbound road for Gallingergtown about 12 miles east. Continue another 13 miles east and you reach Cornwall. There is an international bridge at Cornwall (actually 2 bridges the first touches down on Cornwall Island and the second lands 7 miles from Massena, N.Y. We can see that Alonzo first moved about in the area settled along the St. Lawrence River. Returning to Morrisburg and travelling west 20 miles is the town of Prescott and right across the river is Ogdensburg, N.Y. The information that I can share with Bruce is - Alonzo was the sun of Philip Gallinger who married )first( Elizabeth Hoople. They had 8 children; 1. Nadab 5 Nov 1848 - 4 Oct 1927 mar Jun 1870 Margaret Abrams 1853-28 Sep 1915. They had 11 children. 2. Delila (this name becomes very interesting as it is the name of the second wife. One wonders if Delila was a long-time friend of the first family) All I have on this child is that she was born ca 1850. 3. Rueben OSBORNE 3 Dec 1855 - ca 1936 mar Elizabeth Donnelly 13 Apr 1856 - 16 Dec 1928. They had 4 children. 4. Herman Heber b 20 Nov 1856 5. Philip IRA 2 Jun 1857 - 14 Jan 1925 Carpenter, married first Annie (Isabella?) [no last name] married second Ann Holland 1861-1936 they had 3 children. About two weeks ago a sent a copy of Ira's will to the GallingerGroup. 6. Lidy Catherine b 14 Feb 1859 married Samuel Fetterly 7. Mary b ca 1861 8. Alonzo. Alonzo would have been 2 years when his mother died in 1867. His father married in that same year Delila Stata 13 Nov 1867 Philip Gallinger married )second( Delila Stata 13 Nov 1867. They had four children; 1. Margaret ca 1869-1952 m Joshua G. Fetterly b ca 1867 son of George Gordon 2. Carman George ca Sep 1870 - 13 Oct 1947 bur St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery (Stormont) Ont. married Margaret Marion Bowman 1875-5Jul 1960 bur same as Carman. They had 4 children William Stanley, Roland Carman, Annie May and Dezil G. 3. Robert 4 Jun 1873-6 Sep 1949 mar first 23 Dec 1896 Annabelle "Bella" Epaugh daughter of Albert Epaugh and Mary MINERVA FETTERLY. Robert married second Sarah Jane GAllinger 1877-18 Nov 1969. No issue. 4. Nathan 1876-9 Apr 1943 mar 4 Aug 1900 Mary Jo-Ann Stata 1879-20 Jun 1951 both bur North Valley Cemetery, Newinton, Ont. They had 8 children Now my research slows down. Philip Gallinger is the son of George Gallinger (1793-1824) and Catherine Hartle (1794-1861). I have a note which says the will of George Gallinger is on file in the Clarence Cross collection. I plan to return to that research on Wed. Mar 5th and will look to see if I can locate that will. In the meantime, if any of our fellow GallingerGroup can add or correct to the above. Both Bruce and I would be most grateful. All typed out for now. But Bruce, if you want to send me your snail mail address I will mail a printed set of this tree. Keep your sunnyside UP! I have the following family which I am researching: JAMES WARNER, b. 1789/90 in New York, d. 1850 in Antioch, Illinois; m. ANNIS CRYDERMAN ca 1820 probably in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. Annis was b. 1799/1800 in Canada. Children (all but the last b. in Canada); William, Daniel, Mahala, Hester, Valentine, Oren, Almira, Adna and Prudence. I am descended from Valentine. I have recently been in contact with another Warner researcher who furnished me with data on the Cryderman line showing that Annis was the daughter of Michael and Mary _____ Cryderman; Michael was the son of Valentine and Catherine _____ C. who were from Johnstown, Tryon Co., New York. I do not know who the parents of James Warner were (John and Hannah has been suggested), and he may possibly have had brothers William and/or Francis. I strongly suspect that this Warner family was also from Tryon Co. area and of German descent. If any of this looks familiar to you, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. While I don`t believe I have any Gallinger`s in my tree I would be interested in finding a copy of a book I saw mentioned in your mail archives. It was entitled "200 years of Osnabruck Center 1784-1984" I understand it is out of print but I wondered if you knew of a library or a historical society that has a copy. Would appreciate any help you can give me on this. The family names I am looking for are Alexander, Polk and Duffin. Alexanders arriving in stormont county about 1838-40. Please e-mail me at slo@dakota.net. Thanks. I enjoyed reading about that area. I had been looking for Aultsville and Osnabruck Center for almost 6 months and then discovered they no longer existed.
