Hugh Finlay Esq. George Powell Esq. Thos. Dunn, Esq Henry Caldwell Esq. Edwd. Harrison Esq. William Grant Esq. John Collins Esq. Francois Baby Esq Adam Mabane Esq. Chas. DeLanaudiere Esq. J.G.C. Delery Esq. Le Cte. Dupre Esq. His Lordship intimated to the Council, that it remained a question, upon the late Regulation for the disposition of the Waste Lands of the Crown, whether the Boards constituted for that purpose were authorised to make Locations to the Sons of Loyalists, on their coming to full Age and that it was his wish to put a Marke of Honor upon the families who had adhered to the Unity of the Empire, and joined the Royal Standard in America before the Treaty of Separation in the year 1783. The Council concuring with his Lordship, it is accordingly Ordered: That the several Land Boards take course for the preserving a Registry of the namesof all persons falling under the description aforementioned to the end that their posterity may be discriminated, from future settlers, in the Parish Registers and Rolls of the Militia of their repective Districts, and other Public Remembrancers of the Province, as proper objects, by their persevering in the Fidelity and Conduct so honourable to their ancestors, for distinguished Benefits and Privileges. And it is also ordered, that the said Land Boards may in every such case provide not only the Sons of those Loyalists, as they arrive to full age, but for their Daughters also of that age, or on their Marriage, assigning to each a Lot of Two Hundred Acres, more or less, provided nevertheless that they respectively comply with the general Regulations, and that it shall satisfactorily appear that there has been no Default in the due Cultivation and Improvement of the Lands aready assigned to the head of the family of which they are members. I hope members of the Gallinger Group enjoyed reading the will of Allinder (Eamer) Gallinger. Allinder was married 5 Oct 1824 Trinity Church, Cornwall (Stormont) Ont., to Harmonous Gallinger. Allinder "Eleanor" Eamer b 17 Jan 1807 was the daughter of Mary Ann Cryderman and Philip Eamer. Harmonous Gallinger b ca 1800 was the son of Catharine Cryderman and Michael R. Gallinger. Michael R. is the son of the original "Michael" UEL. Harmonous and Allinder had 12 children: Samuel-Michael; Dvaid-Lou; Diannah; Daniel; William; Mary-Ann; Marilla-Catharine; Harriet; Philip, Thomas-Oliver; Joseph, Elinor. It's always fun to find an important person in one's tree. Todays message is a newspaper article concerning Dr. Jacob H. Gallinger also known as Senator Gallinger. Jacob was born in Cornwall the son of Jacob Gallinger and Catherine Cook. Jacob was the son of George Gallinger who is the son of the original "Michael" UEL. I wonder if a young Canadian-born boy could go on to become a United States Senator today? The 1851 census shows that Jacob as an apprentice - (probably in the newspaper trade.) He moved to the U.S.A., studied medicine and enjoyed a very successful practise. Later in life went into politics where he was also very successful. Hope you and yours have a Happy Easter Lily jworrall@cnwl.igs.net Cornwall Standard, Friday, April 7, 1911 Notable Tribute to Senator Gallinger Remarkable Demonstration in His Honour at Washington A notable tribute was paid to Senator J. H. Gallinger, an old Cornwall boy, at Washington on Tuesday evening of last week. It is many years since Senator Gallinger left Cornwall to take up his residence in the United States, but he has not forgotten his old home town and pays frequent visits to his brothers (William Gallinger, ex Reeve of Cornwall, and Philip Gallinger, of Cornwall Township), and his sister, (Mrs. Alice Gallinger, of Cornwall), and he has many warm friends here who will appreciate the following summary of the report of the banquet given in his honour. The Washington Herald prefaces a very comprehensive report with the following remarks :- To express "not that gratitude which is a lively expression of favours to come, but a heartfelt appreciation of an untiring championship of the District in the past." residents of Washington gave to Senator Jacob H. Gallinger, of New Hampshire, chairman of the Senate Committee on the District of Columbia, a mammoth party on the occasion of his seventy-fourth birthday anniversary. The most representative Washington attendance that has gathered in a banquet hall since the dinner to Crown Price Henry, of Prussia, according to the speakers, gathered in the large ballroom of the New Willard. It included representatives of every vocation, as well as of every political creed. President Taft, Senator Bailey, of Texas, former Senator Chandler, of New Hampshire, former Commissioner H. B. F. Macfardland, and others, vied with one another in paying the tribute of their eloquence to the guest of the evening. The hall into which the guests passed from the receiving line was a bewildering bower of color, in which the reich carmen of American Beauty roses vied with the red of the American flag and the scarlet background of the State emblem of New Hampshire, that hung over the seat reserved for the most honoured guest. And throughout almost the entire length of the dinner and the speaking that followed the three galleries of the room were crowded with women, relatives and friends of the diners and with them, anxious to play a part in the tribute to Senator Gallinger. Senator Bailey, leader of the opposition to Senator Gallinger's party in the upper house, but whose vote was cast on the same side more than once during the late session, responded to the toast, "Why we love Gallinger," in place of George A. Post, of New York who was unable to attend because of illness. In the course of his speech Senator Bailey said, "I accepted the invitation to respond to the toast 'Why we love Gallinger,' because I know he deserves the affectionate gratitude you feel for him." President Taft paid high tribute to the guest of the evening. Commissioner Rudolph, who presided at the opening of the dinner, before introducing Mr. Warner as toastmaster said :- This splendid representation of the citizens of the District of Columbia pleasantly augmented by other friends of the guest of honour from various cities, has gathered here to-night to join in offering a public tribute to him who for twenty years has been on the National Capital's most loyal friends and staunchest champions. We meet to express and emphasize our admiration for his lofty character, our appreciation for his splendid career, and our gratitude for the magnificent services he has rendered the District of Columbia. He has with untiring devotion studied our needs and problems with wisdom and courage throughout his stay in the Senate, and never failed to advocate and press such measures as would aid in making this the greatest capital city of the world. "With public recognition he so well deserves we are happily enabled to link the celebration of his birthday to bespeak for him long life and happiness, with the sincere wish that he may be long spared to dignity and adorn the high place he has won." The Presentations George P. Foster presented Senator GAllinger with a solid silver tray and desk set "from his Chicago friends, the American Civic Association," and in behalf of the plate printers of Washington he presented a silver pitcher as a "token of their esteem and affection." Gen. George H. Harries, president of the Board of Trade, praised Senator Gallinger as a patriotic legislator who not only has worked for the best interests of Washington, but always gave heed to appeals for the things that tended to make for a greater Washington. On behalf of the Board of Trade he presented Senator Gallinger with a magnificent gold watch with a diamond set in the case. Continuing he said "I am representing 900 public-spirited citizens of Washington, who are desirous of paying tribute to Senator GAllinger. The Chamber of Commerce favours everything that has been said by all the speakers here. His record as a national legislator has been a success and the people of Washington are thankful for the opportunity given them to pay tribute to his services. "On behalf of the Camber of Commerce, as a token of appreciation, I present to you this silver loving cup, with the wish that you will long and have good health and much happiness." Rev. Dr. W. P. Thirkield, president of Hoard University, said Senator Gallinger stood for the building up of the public school system as the best way of maintaining peace. Senator Elia Root referred to Senator Gallinger as the "Uncle Joe" of the Senate. Instantly there was a scene of enthusiasm. The diners rose to their feet and shouted "Uncle Joe ! Uncle Joe !" "I join with every man who has spoken on the record of Senator Gallinger," said Speaker Cannon. "He has been and is a wise national legislator." Senator Gallinger responded to the high tributes paid to him in an eloquent speech. Noisy Demonstration The dinner itself brought forth several spontaneous and noisy demonstrations of affection for the guest of honour. When the time for the ices course came, the vanguard of the small army of waiters, head by"Gus," marched behind the speakers' tables with trays of ice cream, the first nine of which bore the letters of Senator Gallinger's name. And while the letter-bearers formed in line behind the guest of honour, the diners rose to their feet, cheering and waving their napkins on high. And while the procession passed once around the gib hall the guests joined in singing "What's the Matter with Gallinger ?" -if not melodiously at least with right good will. An Editorial Tribute The Washington Herald says editorially :- "The tribute which the citizens of the National Capital paid last night to Senator Gallinger was thoroughly deserved. During his many years in Congress, Senator GAllinger has been a wise, impartial; and steadfast friend of the District. As the head of the Senate Committee having jurisdiction over local affairs, he has been in close relation with the citizens of Washington, and he has worked industriously and effectively to secure needed legislation. "In his dual capacity, Senator Gallinger may be credited more than any other one man, with contributing to the progress and development of the National Capital. The labour which has been imposed upon him has been onerous, but he has performed his duty willingly and heartily. He has not hesitated to sacrifice his personal convenience for the sake of the District. It was but fitting, therefore, that the citizens here should testify their appreciation of his unselfish and effective service, and afford him substantial evidence of the esteem in which he is universally held." ============================================================= Date: Sun, 14 Apr 1996 17:32:09 -0400 From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Subject: Gallinger Connection This week's write up is about Bill Gallinger. He was the only son of Donald Christopher Gallinger (1849-1872) and his wife Alice Gallinger (1853-1940). Donald died within a year of marrying Alice and left her with a son (below) W. H. Gallinger. Alice then lived with her in-laws Michael Gallinger and his wife Sarah Elizabeth and is shown on the census records of 1871-81-91-1901 as a resident of their home. The 1881 census shows her as a widow, lodger, cotton spinner who could read and write. William "Bill" is also a cotton spinner. Michael and Sarah -- who took this young family in after their son Donald died -- were my gg grandparents through their son Michael (the younger.) Michael and Sarah had eight children. Their youngest child and fifth daughter - Mary Jane - married Sam Fitzpatrick. Sam and Mary Jane named one of their sons Donald after the man who died so young. Today, Donald is in his early seventies and is a member of my genealogy class at St. Lawrence college this year. Two weeks ago, Donald came to class with a metal plaque which he called a "coffin plaque" it reads "Michael Gollinger [sic] died April 23, 1893, 75 years 8 mos." Apparently these decorated silver plated plaques were attached to the coffin but removed before burial and given to a member of the family - in this case, Mary Jane (Gallinger) Fitzpatrick. It meant a great deal to me that Don would give me this plaque after having it in his family for over 100 years. Genealogists are very special people! regards Lily Worrall jworrall@cnwl.igs.net W. H. Gallinger Council Dean Dies Suddenly Alderman William H. Gallinger, Dean of Cornwall City Council and a member of that body for 32 years, filling various offices, passed away at the Montreal Neurological Institute, Royal Victoria Hospital at 6 o'clock this morning. Ald. Gallinger had been about the city as usual until Thursday last, when he became seriously ill. He was removed to hospital in Montreal on Monday and the announcement of his death early today will come as a surprise and shock to many of his friends, who were unaware of the seriousness of his illness. Ald. Gallinger served the people of his native city long and faithfully, first as councillor and later a deputy reeve and reeve and filled many important committee positions. As a deputy reeve and reeve he represented Cornwall on the Counties Council for many years occupying positions of trust and responsibility on that body, as he did in the City Council. He was born here, an only child of the late Donald Gallinger and his wife, Alice Gallinger, and was in his 77th year. Educated at local schools, he was for many years an overseer at the Howard Smith Paper Mills Limited, from which service he retired a few years ago. "Bill" Gallinger, as he was familiarly called by his friends, was a genial, whole-souled man, with a ready smile and hearty greeting for his friends, and his passing will leave a place in the community which will be hard to fill. He took a leading part in everything pertaining to the welfare of his native city and carried out his every duty faithfully and well. He is survived by his widow the former Miss Elizabeth Byles; two sons and a daughter - His Worship Mayor Lloyd D. Gallinger, Ralph Gallinger and Mrs. J. W. McCanse (Alice), all in Cornwall. The body will arrive at his home, 230 York Street, Thursday morning. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon to Trinity Parish Church and Woodlawn cemetery. Final Tribute Paid Memory Ald. Gallinger That the death of Alderman William H. Gallinger, Dean of Cornwall City Council was deeply regretted was indicated by the large attendance at his funeral, held Saturday afternoon from the family residence, 230 York Street, to Trinity Parish Church and Woodlawn cemetery. Alderman Gallinger died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, early Wednesday morning, his death coming as a shock to many friends as he had been about the city as usual until the Thursday before his death. He was removed to the hospital on Monday and passed away two days later. The cortege, which proceeded from the home along York Street to Third, East on Third to Augustus Street and South on that street to Second Street and West To Trinity Church was a most impressive one. Members of the City Police Department, Cornwall Township Police Department, members of the Cornwall Fire Department, all three in official uniform, were followed by members of the City Council and corporation officials, members of the Athletic Commission, private citizens in all walks of life and many friends in automobiles. When the members of the police department arrived at the church, the last of the autos had not yet left Alderman Gallinger's home. It was a fitting tribute to the memory of a man who had devoted 32 years of his life to the service of the ratepayers of his native city, first as a Councillor in the Town Council and latterly as an Alderman in the City Council. Alderman Gallinger died in harness. The service at the church and grave side was conducted by Ven H.A.E. Clarke, M.A., Archdeacon of Cornwall, Rector of Trinity Parish Church, assisted by Rev. John C. Garrett, B. A., L.S.T. assistant rector. Hymns sung during the service were "Take My Life and Let It Be," and "Now the Day is Over." Earle G. Poole, organist and choir director, presided at the console. Honorary pall bearers were the members of the City Council and corporation officials. Active bearers were Dr. J.H.O. Armstrong, Dr. C. A. Keddy, W. H. Eaton, Gus Murray, James McAteer and John D. Firn. Attending the Funeral Attending the funeral from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Gallinger, Brockville; W. A. Staley (sic), T. W. Newton and Harold Wilson, all of Ottawa; Mrs. Andrew Cascaden, Mr and Mrs. Roy McCanse and Mrs. Lorne Campbell all of Hemmingford, Que; Jack Brennan, Montreal, formerly of Cornwall. A magnificent collection of beautiful floral tributes were sent by relatives and friends, showing the regard in which Alderman Gallinger was held and the regret felt at his sudden death. These not only filled the room where the body lay but overflowed into two additional rooms, the collection being one of the largest and most varied ever seen in Cornwall. The family received a great many telegrams, letters and cards of condolence from friends in distant places as well as local and district friends, showing the widespread regret felt at the passing of Alderman Gallinger. Many Called at Home While the body remained at the home, a great many called to pay their respects to the memory of Alderman Gallinger and to offer words of comfort and sympathy to Mrs. Gallinger, her two sons and daughter - His Worship Mayor Lloyd D. Gallinger, Ralph Gallinger and Mrs. J. W. McCanse in the great loss they had sustained. Alderman Gallinger was a member of the Cornwall Lodge No 125 A.E. & A.M. Members of the order marched in a body to the home on Friday night when the lodge service was conducted by Arthur Youngs, Worshipful Master, and James Ross, Chaplain. Flags were flown at half mast in front of the City Hall from the time of Alderman Gallinger's death until after the funeral, out of respect to his memory. ============================================================================= Date: Sat, 20 Apr 1996 13:58:45 -0400 To: Shaun From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Yes the Land Registry Office has a big index book. But all of the Wills are available. I went in for an hour yesterday. There are at least 25 more Wills for Gallingers (right up to the 1980s). This would be Henry the son of the original Michael. You could add this to your files as "new" - It says "I Henry Gallinger of the Township of Cornwall in the Eastern District, Yeoman, maketh Oath and saith that he was acquainted with Jacob Waggoner of the Township of Osnabruck in said District, deceased, Yeoman, from his infancy to the day of his death - that the said Jacob Waggoner resided in the British Colonies now the United States of America previous to the 1776 - that he joined the British (illegible word) before the year 1783 and served in the capacity of a servant during the Revolutionary War to Capt Dailey [sic] of the late Royal Regiment of New York for nearly two years and that he came to this Province before the year 1786, where he always resided. Signed this 11th day of November 1833 Henry X Gallinger (his Mark) I really have to brush up on my History some more. I think what Henry is doing here is vouching for Jacob Waggoner as a soldier during the American Revolution so that Jacob's family can make claims for UEL property. ============================================================ From: BILLY GALLINGER <76342.1254@CompuServe.COM> I am in the process of trying to obtain an updated version of our side of the Gallingers from a cousin. It does not go too far into the past. My Grandfather, George Gallinger, was born 7/6/1864 in Chickesaw County, Deerfield Township, Iowa. His parents were Benjamin and Amanda Loan Gallinger. Benjamin was born 3/1/1832 and Amanda 3/11/1842, locations unknown. They had six other children 3 boys and 3 girls. I have their first names and year of birth. I will try to get the whole thing together in the near future and get it sent to Shaun for inclusion to all.
