file =Gall5.txt ====================== I could mail out a-will-a-week until I run out. But that is far too simple for me! Someone asked me if I was typing all these wills for the group. I type wills into my family history program "Reunion." When I print out a tree for someone the appropriate wills, deeds etc. are a part of the printout. When I want something for this weekly posting, I open "Reunion" copy and paste. Instead of wills I thought I would tell you about a little e-mailing I have done this week. Some weeks ago I had a note from Dan who, having seen my Gallinger posting with the Palatine Site, said he had a good friend in Ottawa who "knew all about the Gallingers" and I should get in touch with this friend. I wrote back to Dan and suggested that his friend might like to join the Gallinger Group. Proselytize? Me? :-> Now - this week Dan has written back reporting that Dexter Hawn says he is too old for computers but has given some information to be passed on. (I assume to all of us in the group.) His info is as follows: Michael Gallinger was born in Germany ca. 1721; then Michael Gallinger Jr. was born in 1751; then Joseph Gallinger was born in 1793 and he married Katherine Kriderman [sic] and secondly Paula Groves. He is on the Branch from Joseph and Paula Gallinger. Grammar Lesson #101 - [sic] - In genealogy there is an important phrase "You can't change history" so if some old gaffer one hundred years ago misspelled a word, you must copy it exactly as written but you can put [sic] after it to show you "know better". Square brackets are most often used. Tonight I wrote to Dan and offered the following: Michael Sr. is well documented. Michael Jr. married first Rosetta LaForce and second Catherine Cryderman Joseph is the son of Michael Jr and Catherine Cryderman and he was born 18 Dec 1793 and baptized 5 Jan 1794 in Williamsburg, Ontario. Joseph married three times 1. Susannah McNeil on 3 May 1814 at Trinity Church, Cornwall 2. Mary "Nelly" Alguire on 26 March 1816 at Trinity 3. Amelia Groves on 14 Jul 1831 at Trinity >From the records of Trinity Church, Cornwall "Married by license on the 14th day of July 1831 Joseph Gollinger [sic] of the township of Cornwall, widow, to Amelia Groves spinster of the same place. Witnesses Robert Milroy, Elisabeth [sic] Eastman by George Archbold, Minister of Cornwall." Archbold is the only Minister at Trinity to write the name as G"o"llinger all others before and after have written it G"a"llinger. Elisabeth with an "s" is an older (sometimes German) way of spelling Elizabeth. >From "Ontario Marriage Records" compiled and written by Thomas B Wilson "Joseph Gallinger widow and Emelia [sic] Groves spinster both of Cornwall bondsmen Nathan Groves and Levi Groves both of Cornwall Yeomen. 12 Jul 1831 at Cornwall." Wilson has the above listed as an Ontario Marriage but it is my belief that this record is for the marriage license. Archbold told us Joseph and Amelia were married by license and I imagine the two "Groves" bondsmen - Levi and Nathan - were Ameilia's two close male relatives. So the license was purchased on the 12th and two days later they were married on the 14th. Joseph's children by Mary "Nelly" Alguire were Jacob 1819-1903 Sarah Catherine 1821 - Oliver Lou 1824 - Josiah 1827-1911 Mary 1830 -d.i. (died infant) Another child Mary Elizabeth was born 1832 - d.i., and was probably the daughter of Joseph and Amelia. The following is a record for which I have no links. Just three names, one of them being a Gallinger and therefore important to me. William J. Hawn (1850-1919) married Hattie M. Gallinger (1868-1908) they had one daughter Millie 1893-1916. All three are buried in Grantly United Church Cemetery in Williamsburg Twp. So my question for Dexter Hawn is...are William and Hattie and Millie a part of his tree? I would be so glad to have a tree for these three. Hattie Gallinger cannot be the daughter of Joseph, the dates do not fit, but she could be the granddaughter of Joseph. You will notice that the records I have given about are vastly different to the information Dexter Hawn has sent. I imagine Dexter was working from "memory" and too, Dan was not familiar with the spelling of these names. I didn't tell Dexter he was "wrong" - that's no fun! Dan did not say Dexter was a genealogist but simply a friend who had Gallingers in his tree. Instead I offered a good solid tree with some facts to support it. I offered to snail-mail more if he would like to have it. Genealogy is often likened to a jig saw puzzle. The pieces sit on your desk and you nudge them about. Finding a bit of colour (information) here and there until the "fit" jumps out at you. Ah Hah! That's where it goes! The satisfaction is mighty - as you pounce on the piece and click it into place. For a minute, a day, a week, depending upon the length of the search you wander about with a smug smile in the corner of your mind and then another piece catches your eye and you nudge it about... Harvey Gallinger was the son of Henry and Catharine (nee Cryderman.) He was born 5 Oct 1816 and baptised at Trinity Anglican Church, Cornwall on 12 Jan 1817. He died 26 Jul 1891. Harvey married 6 Feb 1824 to Mary Ann Gallinger (3 Feb 1824 - 28 Oct 1885). (Mary Ann was the daughter of George Gallinger) The following is the 1871 census record for Harvey and his family. 1871 census, reel 10007, Osnabruck, page 97, line 17. Harvey Gallinger, 55 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, farmer, married. Mary, 47 years, born Ontario, E. Meth, Dutch origin, married. Allen, 27 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin. Althiann, 23 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin. Hilson, 21 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, carpenter. Alexander, 17 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, farmer. Jane, 18 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin. Janet, 16 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, attends school. Curtus [sic], 13 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, attends school. Helena, 9 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, attends school. Helen, 6 years, born Ontario, Church of England, Dutch origin, attends school. So far as we know "Gallinger" is a German name. Why is Harvey's family described at Dutch? My favourite theory is the confusion between the word Dutch and the word Deutsch (which means "Germany"). Finally I offer you Harvey's will. It is a short will be offers some interesting insights into the times. One wonders why Harvey was so concerned about fire insurance. Will Harvey Gallinger I Harvey Gallinger of the Township of Osnabruck in the County of Stormont, Province of Ontario. Yeoman do make and ordain this my last will and testament. 1. I will and ordain that my son curtis Gallinger shall keep my beforementioned dwelling house continually insured to the extent of at least five hundred dollars (including contents) and as this provision is intended to secure to my said daughters permanency of a home.
