file = gall7.txt ================== Date: Wed, 16 Oct 1996 23:16:23 -0600 To: griffish@idirect.com From: afrolick@dlcwest.com (Art Frolick) Subject: Gallinger Roots Hi Shaun: I've been involved in genealogy for 15 years searching paternal and maternal roots, but it has only been during the past 4 years that I've concentrated on the GA(O)LLINGER family. I have recorded all Gallinger, etc. names from 4 PAC files, mostly Osnabruck and Williamsburg Counties and from 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 census records for those 2 counties, plus info from other books and correspondence. I have spent countless hours trying to put family units together. Others are working on this with me (snailmail). With interest on email it only seemed logical that I could tie us all together (somehow). On 5 July 1996, you sent a message out re an article published in the Ottawa Citizen in June 1986 about Lloyd Gallinger's 15 year search ending up in Golling, Austria. I correspond with Lloyd's sister-in- law, Mary, widow of Lloyd's brother Mel, in Calgary. While Lloyd found no definite trace of family, his plan to present the mayor of Golling with a gift was a good idea as definite links seemed evident that the Gollingers did exist at one time in Golling, Austria. I understand the Gallingers/Gollingers in Canada had a family crest. It is almost identical to the coat of arms of Golling (I have a copy of it.) Another genealogist in Ottawa has been tracing the name to Britzingen, southwest of Freibug, Germany from 1623. That lineage to 1751 doesn't match our Michael Sr. But who knows? Your other question - I have: Michael Urias (b.ca 1851; d.13 Jan 1942) m.Mrs. Mahalah Larking Michael Urias was son of Michael (bap. 1819), who was son of George G. (b. 1789), who was the son of George (b.ca.1764), who was son of Michael Sr. They lived in Williamsburg and Cornwall Twps. I will look in my records for another Urias if the above is not your ancestor. I can start matching people to the 4 sons of Michael Sr. Starting at the top for you: George Michael - d. 13 Jan 1832 (I had a typo with 1831), age 69 - is on pg.61 of Public Archives of Canada (PAC) film #3028 mar. 20 Oct 1788 Margaret Warner (b.ca.1767; d.1840) - provided by Sam Gallinger, CA, on internet. George G. - b. 7 Oct 1789 or 1799; d. 14 Dec 1879 - St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Gallingertown Monument Transcriptions pub. by Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Gen. Soc. list 1879 death date, and age 80. I visited Gallingertown Cem. July 1996 and remember seeing the stone. - Vital Satistics of Canada also show 14 Dec 1879. Reg.#013883 79 if you wanted to order the certificate. mar. 7 Apr 1818 Janet Cameron of Barnhardt's Island (b.ca.1799; d.1855) - PAC film #3028 - buried Gallingertown Cem. Monument lists d. 9 Feb 1855, age 56 Michael - bap. 2 May 1819, Cornwall; d.1 Dec. 1898 - pg. 158 of PAC film #3028 lists birth to George & Janet of Barnhardt's Island - bur. Gallingertown Cem., age 79 on headstone mar. #1 Mary Hannah and they had a daughter, Mary Jane, who was born Mar 1843. I suspect the mother died at childbirth because Michael married again -- in Mar 1843! #2 Elizabeth Pitts m. 16 Mar 1843 (b.1 Feb 1824; d. 20 Sep 1920) bur. Gallingertown Cem. - sources of these was Lynne O'Brien Cook's Resource Centre in Morrisburg. I quickly photocopied a sheet on Michael and now question if Michael would bury w.#1 and then marry w.#2 the same month? Maybe same church same day? (I'm saying this with tongue in cheek, of course). Those dates need to be confirmed. Michael Urias - b. 18 Mar 1851/b. or bap.15 Apr 1852; d. 13 Jan 1942 - Lynne Cook's Resource Centre. Census Records that list children of Michael & Elizabeth: 1851 - C11717 - Williamsburg Twp. 1861 - C1014 - " 1871 - C10006 - " 1881 - C13227 & C13228 " You might want to contact Lynne at: Lynne O'Brien Cook PO Box 607 Morrisburg ON K0C 1X0 Ph. 613-543-2045 She will not do research for you, but if you give her a donation, she will no doubt photocopy some of her material. Ask her for the "Michael Gallinger, b. 28 March 1819" Family Group Sheet, and since there is an asterisk beside Michael Urias, I suspect she has done a chart for him so ask for that also. She also has the St. George's Cemetery list for Gallingertown - 9 pages. I forget if she charged 20/25 cents per sheet. Good luck and hope this is helpful. By the way, Sam Gallinger in Calif. is a descendent of George Michael's 4th child, Michael George. Your George G. is the 2nd child of George Michael. Mary Gallinger's address is: 608 - 4603 Varsity Dr. NW Calgary AB T3A 2V7 Her late husband, John Melville (Mel), and Lloyd who went to Austria are descendents of George Michael's 12th child, Benjamin H.(1815-1900). I got the impression when I talked to Mary on the phone that she wasn't too interested in all this since her husband died. They toured the Mohawk Valley years ago, and have attended Gallinger family reunions. Last year, she passed many of my questions on to a Catherine Gollinger- Lorente in Renfrew. That's it for now. Arlene Frolick, Regina, Sask. ===================================================================== From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (Lily/John Worrall) Subject: Hello Gallingers Hi Everyone! This cannot be ignored. This morning (Oct 21) on the front page of the Cornwall Standard Freeholder is a large colour picture with the caption "Just Married". The groom is leaning negligently on the top of the door of a snazzy red convertible. The bridge is sitting on the seat of the with her feet on the ground, holding on to the hand of her new husband. They both look very happy. Long Sault - (pronouced soo) "Two residents of Woodland Villa (nursing home) took their vows of matrimony this weekend before a standing-room only church. Fred 89. and Dorothy Gallinger (Legue) were married before more than 200 family and friends at Anglican - Christ Church and were later given a reception at their home at the villa on Milles Roches Road. Dorothy, 75, who gave birth to 19 children has 58 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild moved to the villa last July. Fred's wife passed away earlier this year, and he has been living at the villa since 1994. His only child, a son, is deceased. Turkey dinner reception was held at the villa with everyone enjoying the delicious meal and happy occassion. It's nice to see cheerful news on the front page and even better when it involves a Gallinger. I don't know Fred or his new wife but one wonders how he fits into the Gallinger tree. That's all for now--- regards Lily jworrall@cnwl.igs.net ================================================== From: Earlene Pantel Subject: Re: GALLINGER family Date: Wed, 4 Dec 1996 13:32:14 +0000 Dear Shaun, Not much to go on with the GALLINGER group, but I can offer some names that might help associate other lines.
