And there was a Loyd ? >>Gallinger mayor of Cornwall that was an uncle in 1947 from a newspaper >>clipping. Shaun - Lloyd Gallinger was indeed a well respected and admired mayor of Cornwall. In fact almost all of the Gallingers have done well through the years. Lloyd's father William "Bill" Gallinger was also mayor of Cornwall. (I could send you a copy of the newspaper clippings re Bill's funeral if you do not have them.) The genealogy is as follows - starting with Lloyd and following back on the Gallinger name... Lloyd had a brother Ralph and a sister Alice Lillian. Their parents were William Gallinger and Elizabeth "Lizzy" Byles. Alice Lillian married a McCanse. Going back another generation William Gallinger's parents were Donald Gallinger and Alice Gallinger (she was also a Gallinger - daughter of Jacob Gallinger and Catharine Cook) Back again Donald Gallinger's parents were Michael Gallinger and Sarah Elizabeth Gallinger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Subject: William Gallinger W. H. Gallinger Council Dean Dies Suddenly Alderman William H. Gallinger, Dean of Cornwall City Council and a member of that body for 32 years, filling various offices, passed away at the Montreal Neurological Institute, Royal Victoria Hospital at 6 o'clock this morning. Ald. Gallinger had been about the city as usual until Thursday last, when he became seriously ill. He was removed to hospital in Montreal on Monday and the announcement of his death early today will come as a surprise and shock to many of his friends, who were unaware of the seriousness of his illness. Ald. Gallinger served the people of his native city long and faithfully, first as councillor and later a deputy reeve and reeve and filled many important committee positions. As a deputy reeve and reeve he represented Cornwall on the Counties Council for many years occupying positions of trust and responsibility on that body, as he did in the City Council. He was born here, an only child of the late Donald Gallinger and his wife, Alice Gallinger, and was in his 77th year. Educated at local schools, he was for many years an overseer at the Howard Smith Paper Mills Limited, from which service he retired a few years ago. "Bill" Gallinger, as he was familiarly called by his friends, was a genial, whole-souled man, with a ready smile and hearty greeting for his friends, and his passing will leave a place in the community which will be hard to fill. He took a leading part in everything pertaining to the welfare of his native city and carried out his every duty faithfully and well. He is survived by his widow the former Miss Elizabeth Byles; two sons and a daughter - His Worship Mayor Lloyd D. Gallinger, Ralph Gallinger and Mrs. J. W. McCanse (Alice), all in Cornwall. The body will arrive at his home, 230 York Street, Thursday morning. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon to Trinity Parish Church and Woodlawn cemetery. Final Tribute Paid Memory Ald. Gallinger That the death of Alderman William H. Gallinger, Dean of Cornwall City Council was deeply regretted was indicated by the large attendance at his funeral, held Saturday afternoon from the family residence, 230 York Street, to Trinity Parish Church and Woodlawn cemetery. Alderman Gallinger died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, early Wednesday morning, his death coming as a shock to many friends as he had been about the city as usual until the Thursday before his death. He was removed to the hospital on Monday and passed away two days later. The cortege, which proceeded from the home along York Street to Third, East on Third to Augustus Street and South on that street to Second Street and West To Trinity Church was a most impressive one. Members of the City Police Department, Cornwall Township Police Department, members of the Cornwall Fire Department, all three in official uniform, were followed by members of the City Council and corporation officials, members of the Athletic Commission, private citizens in all walks of life and many friends in automobiles. When the members of the police department arrived at the church, the last of the autos had not yet left Alderman Gallinger's home. It was a fitting tribute to the memory of a man who had devoted 32 years of his life to the service of the ratepayers of his native city, first as a Councillor in the Town Council and latterly as an Alderman in the City Council. Alderman Gallinger died in harness. The service at the church and grave side was conducted by Ven H.A.E. Clarke, M.A., Archdeacon of Cornwall, Rector of Trinity Parish Church, assisted by Rev. John C. Garrett, B. A., L.S.T. assistant rector. Hymns sung during the service were "Take My Life and Let It Be," and "Now the Day is Over." Earle G. Poole, organist and choir director, presided at the console. Honorary pall bearers were the members of the City Council and corporation officials. Active bearers were Dr. J.H.O. Armstrong, Dr. C. A. Keddy, W. H. Eaton, Gus Murray, James McAteer and John D. Firn. Attending the Funeral Attending the funeral from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Gallinger, Brockville; W. A. Staley (sic), T. W. Newton and Harold Wilson, all of Ottawa; Mrs. Andrew Cascaden, Mr and Mrs. Roy McCanse and Mrs. Lorne Campbell all of Hemmingford, Que; Jack Brennan, Montreal, formerly of Cornwall. A magnificent collection of beautiful floral tributes were sent by relatives and friends, showing the regard in which Alderman Gallinger was held and the regret felt at his sudden death. These not only filled the room where the body lay but overflowed into two additional rooms, the collection being one of the largest and most varied ever seen in Cornwall. The family received a great many telegrams, letters and cards of condolence from friends in distant places as well as local and district friends, showing the widespread regret felt at the passing of Alderman Gallinger. Many Called at Home While the body remained at the home, a great many called to pay their respects to the memory of Alderman Gallinger and to offer words of comfort and sympathy to Mrs. Gallinger, her two sons and daughter - His Worship Mayor Lloyd D. Gallinger, Ralph Gallinger and Mrs. J. W. McCanse in the great loss they had sustained. Alderman Gallinger was a member of the Cornwall Lodge No 125 A.E. & A.M. Members of the order marched in a body to the home on Friday night when the lodge service was conducted by Arthur Youngs, Worshipful Master, and James Ross, Chaplain. Flags were flown at half mast in front of the City Hall from the time of Alderman Gallinger's death until after the funeral, out of respect to his memory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 30 Dec 1995 09:08:11 -0400 To: griffish@idirect.com From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Subject: Gallingers (1) Hi Shaun- Thank you for the info you sent re Michael Gallinger. That is a very interesting letter! Michael and his sons are the first Gallingers to arrive in Canada. I've been told by many local genealogists that if your name is Gallinger then you are a descendant of Michael. This makes researching in Canada and the U.S. interesting because you can always trace a family back to Michael. However it creates a huge question in my mind as to why there are no other Gallingers arriving in the new world (even now). Is/was Michael's name really Gallinger? Some of the church records spell it Gollinger and I find that very very interesting. Here's why... There is a town in ** Austria ** in the state/prov of Strasburg (Mozart country!) called Golling. Germans use a phrase "Ich bin Berliner" (I am a Berliner or I come from Berlin). I have to wonder if Michael, when arriving in the U.S. might have said "Ich bin Gollinger" (I am a Gollinger or I come from ** Golling **). Now, don't quote me on this. It's pure speculation. I'm probably absolutely wrong. But I have asked several times on the 'Net if any German knows anyone by the name of Gallinger and have yet to get a reply. Do you know anyone with a German address/phonebook CD? Maybe there are thousands of Gallingers in Germany. I would just like to hear about a few! Your letter confirms that Michael was UEL. I would dearly like to know where your W. Jarvis of Ingersol found this information. Any ideas? The following is some of the data I have to date- it is still a work in progress :-) and subject to change. Original Michael b ca 1721 Germany, married Agatha Alyda they had children: Michael R., Catherine-"Catrina", Marie, Christopher-"Christan", Maria, Hendrick-"Henry", George, Dorothea-"Dolly". (The four sons Michael, Christian, Henry and George were all enlisted in the King's Royal Regiment of New York (KRRNY) along with their father Michael. Their enlistment info is in a book entitled King's Royal Regiment of New York written by Brig. Gen. Ernest A. Cruickshank originally published in 1931 by Ontario Gen Soc and reprinted in 1984.) Michael's son George b ca 1764, Montgomery, N.Y., mentioned above married Margaret Warner and they had children: George, Mary Margaret, Catherine, Adam Michael, Michael, Henry, Jacob, Elizabeth-"Betsy", Benjamin. Michael's grandson George b ca 1790 Cornwall (Stormont) Ont. married 7 Apr 1818 Janet Cameron b ca 1798 and they had children: Michael, George Allen, Mary Ann, Alexander Jacob, Margaret, John, George, Susannah "Susan". Some of the above have two names so there is no comma in between, other's have nicknames and I've joined them to their rightful name with a - "dash". I am interested when you say "George born in the vicinity of Cornwall as a young man moved to Barnhart Island, later moved to Gallingertown (north of church)." That is very specific. Can you share your source? ---------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 30 Dec 1995 09:14:40 -0400 To: griffish@idirect.com From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Subject: Gallinger (3) Shaun - MY difficulty at present is to connect back to the original UEL Michael Gallinger from Germany. My grandmother Mary Adams Gallinger (lived 102 years 1888-1990.) Unfortunately none of us were interested (at that time) in all the information she carried with her. Now we realize this is not a new story in genealogy! Gram's great grandfather, Michael Gallinger (1818-1893) m Sarah Elizabeth (surname? Gallinger?) (1826-1904). I have the baptism of this earlier Michael and it reads "Michael son of Michael Gallinger and Mary was baptised 27 Sep 1818 by me S. J. Mountain, Trinity Church, Cornwall. Godparents Michael Gallinger, Christian Gallinger and Anna Schwitzer." Gram's father was Michael Warner Gallinger (1855-1934) son of Michael and Sarah above. He was m 31 Dec 1885, by Rev. G. B. Pettit, Trinity, Cornwall, to Isabella "Bella" Adams (1851-1933) Witnesses Hugh Adams and Mary Jane Gallinger. I am trying to find out - who are the above mentioned parents (Michael and Mary) of the first Michael. There are just too many Michaels and Marys. I think the name of Michael *Warner* Gallinger may be significant in my search. Perhaps either Mary his grandmother was a Warner or perhaps it runs in his wife's (Elizabeth's) family. I have written to a Warner to see if there is any connection. I have not yet had a reply. Further back in history there is also Margaret Warner married to George Gallinger and my tree may tie in here but as I yet I have no proof. As I sift through the census I find that "my" Michael Gallingers (the 2 described above) were the first (and only) Gallingers living in the square mile town of Cornwall in 1851 although there were many in Cornwall Township and Osnabruck. --------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 19:00:04 -0400 To: Shaun From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Subject: Gallinger Research etc. Hi Shaun- I have a small blue paperback book, typewritten. Entitled "Two Centuries of Life in Osnabruck Township 1784-1984" written by Beryl Morrison of Ingleside, Ont. It's out of print now but Jerry Dafoe and me are hounding the ladies of the Lost Villages Society to reprint it and they said they will - hopefully before the summer. If you like, I can let you know when it's available again. It does mention "Gallingertown - from the Gallinger familes who settled around the four corners where two roads crossed." and lists the schools, churches, some of the local businessmen, etc. It doesn't have an index at the back :-( but it's only 93 pages and easy to read :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 14 Jan 1996 22:45:22 -0400 From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Subject: Is this a Chinook? It seems to be easy to get the political "stuff" - now I'd like to know the names of his children and what happened to his heirs. Oh well, it will all become clear one of these days. Thank you for sending me the new Gallinger contact in Vancouver. All these people are part of your tree and as soon as you locate Uriah et al then you will know "how" you belong. I think I have Mina somewhere and the McCracken name is a well known name in Cornwall. I'll let you know what I find out from him. Thanks again! ------------------------------ END OF GALL 1 FILE
